An increasing number of counties and the timber harvesters working in them are using Georgia’s new Timber Harvest Notification (THN) system. As of May 26, 52 counties that require harvest notifications had registered and are receiving the automated reports through the GFC-created service. The system has been widely applauded for its ease of operation and time saved on needed communications. Per Georgia law, counties requiring THNs have until July 1, 2023, to begin using the website. To enroll, go to https://gatrees.org/forest-management-conservation/timber-harvest-notifications/, and for assistance, email timberharvest@gfc.state.ga.us.

The invasive pest Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) continues to spread in Georgia. Seven new counties were added to the list of 37 infested counties in 2021. They are Clarke, Hart, Forsyth, Franklin, Madison, Oconee, and Stephens. GFC forest health specialists have hung 63 new traps to track EAB’s 2022 distribution, with results expected by summer’s end.
