ACCG launched a Firefighter Survey this summer to determine the structure of each county's fire departments and the division of county-paid versus volunteer firefighters. Survey responses were received from 134 of 159 counties (84.28%).  Of the survey respondents, 117 counties reported having fire departments in their county and 104 counties reported utilizing volunteer firefighters. According to these survey results, 62 counties have at least 50% volunteer firefighters.  Thirty-seven counties reported utilizing all-volunteer firefighters for their fire departments. Seven counties reported that their volunteer firefighters are paid part-time compensation/on-call. In addition, four counties reported they do not operate fire departments, but either their city does, or they contact their fire service with external agencies.

An illustration of these survey results is included here.
