Want to encourage students to pursue a career in county government? If so, consider hiring a summer intern for your county through the Georgia County Internship Program (GCIP). Each year, the ACCG Civic Affairs Foundation awards grants to counties through the GCIP to fund summer internship projects in counties across the state. Forty-five grants were awarded in 2024. Become part of the 93 counties that have participated in GCIP by submitting your application by October 21 at https://gcip.civicaffairs.org.
All grants cover the costs of a 200-hour internship paid at $15 per hour, FICA, and a stipend towards workers’ compensation costs. Applications are accepted online through October 21. Applications should contain a substantive project that is suitable for a student (high school, college or graduate school, recent college graduate) to complete. All county departments and offices are eligible to apply. A select committee of the ACCG Civic Affairs Foundation Board will review applications and select grant award winners by January 6, 2025. Counties are responsible for recruiting, interviewing, and hiring their interns. All internships must be completed between May 1, 2025 and September 1, 2025.
GCIP enables counties to hire talented high school, college and graduate students, and recent college graduates for specific projects that will: benefit county government and its citizens; give students a chance to learn first-hand about the role of county government; provide practical work experiences students can use in the job market upon graduation; and inspire young people to consider a career in county government. More information about the 2025 program and how to submit an application is available at https://www.accg.org/caf_countyinfo.php. Descriptions of previously funded projects are included in our monthly Intern Spotlights located at https://www.accg.org/gcip_internspotlight.php.
