As news reports continue to cover recent California wildfires, the importance of defensible space is clear. The Georgia Forestry Commission (GFC) is busy helping landowners mitigate their risk of wildfire and plan for the future through prescribed burning and reforestation.

Field work is beginning for two Hurricane Helene relief programs administered by the GFC. Approval notifications have gone out to applicants for assistance in disaster-declared counties. Twenty-five million dollars is being distributed for management practices that reduce wildfire risk by reducing forest fuel loads and improving access.

Prescribed Fire Awareness Week, observed Feb. 2-8, highlights the importance of this forest management tool. It is a safe way to apply a natural process that promotes ecosystem health while reducing fuel build-ups that can feed dangerous wildfires.

Communities across the state are observing Georgia Arbor Day (Feb. 21) this month. Tree giveaways, planting ceremonies, and other activities are being held to highlight the myriad benefits of trees, including their environmental services, aesthetics, and positive impact on health.
