Georgia Southern University Student, Ethan Miller, Completes Internship with Rockdale County

Prior to interning with Rockdale County, Ethan Miller, an information systems student at Georgia Southern University, was somewhat familiar with county government. He gleaned his knowledge from his grandfather who helped the county with SPLOST funding. Through his technology services internship, Miller learned immensely about the day-to-day operations of county government and technology’s role in it, including customer relations and billing.

During the course of his internship, Miller assisted with resolving tickets at the service desk. He also inventoried every computer on the Rockdale County domain. He believed that the latter task was his most important accomplishment with the county. He was able to find 768 computers in the county’s existing inventory, which will go towards ensuring hardware and software updates in every county department in the imminent future.

Miller’s favorite part of the internship experience was being around many coworkers who have years’ worth of experience in the information technology (IT) field. He was able to pick their brains about real-world experiences, rather than just learn from textbooks in the classroom.

To future interns, Miller advises them to learn interpersonal communication to effectively deal with other people. Those in IT will need to know how to troubleshoot problems to effectively perform their jobs. He advises future interns to not let tasks become too daunting. When asked if he has a future in county government, he noted that he would have to gain more experience before giving a definitive answer.
