From left to right: Former Bulloch County CFO Harry Starling, Intern Luke David, Bulloch County, and CFO Whitney Richland.
Luke David worked for the Bulloch County Finance Department as the Capital Assets and Projects Initiative Intern during the summer and fall of 2014. David, an accounting major at Georgia Southern University, recently completed his senior year and is planning to attend graduate school.
During his two-semester internship with Bulloch County, David helped the finance department to develop and implement a process for the proper accounting and maintenance of county assets. The capital assets project had several components and required him to perform various tasks that included locating and identifying capital assets, creating a master assignment schedule and developing templates for additions, entering all assets into accounting software for tracking purposes, tracking additions to assets, performing evaluations of age, condition and usefulness of assets by department, and computing asset depreciation. David also assisted the department with bank reconciliations.
Prior to his internship, David was not familiar with county operations. Upon the conclusion of his internship, he became familiar with how different departments have different funds set up to finance their operations. The internship also gave David an opportunity to learn how to use specific functions in the county’s accounting software that will help him in his future career in public accounting.
