It was decided to ask for the support of our industry as a whole, given the significance of Dan Wilson's lifelong work. The Santa Barbara Maritime Museum is excited about creating a special display with Purisima to supplement existing diving and early offshore oil industry exhibits.

All of us were excited about the possibility of ADCI membership sponsoring this unique display that will honor our industry and a man who dared to "think outside of the box." Additionally, the display will be a significant representation of ADCI and commercial diving for tourists and visitors at the museum.

Carnival won't sail its cruise ships at night near the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. It's too hard to spot the oil then.

The precaution has meant only minor changes in departure times, according to a Carnival spokesman, but it highlights new and growing worries over how the maritime industry can literally navigate the Gulf oil crisis. Gulf ports now must inspect ships for contaminated hulls and race to clean the vessels, while regulators periodically close inlets in Pensacola to trap oil arriving with the high tide.

The Marshall Islands, not the U.S., had the main responsibility for safety inspections on the Deepwater Horizon. The Deepwater Horizon oil rig that exploded in the Gulf of Mexico was built in South Korea. It was operated by a Swiss company under contract to a British oil firm. Primary responsibility for safety and other inspections rested not with the U.S. government but with the Republic of the Marshall Islands — a tiny, impoverished nation in the Pacific Ocean.

OSHA has cited Scuba Clean Inc. in St. Petersburg, Fla., for alleged safety and health violations. The company provides yacht sales and services designed, according to its website, to "make boating easier, safer and more enjoyable." OSHA initiated an inspection after receiving a complaint in December 2009. Penalties total $200,900.

The company has been cited with three willful safety violations and proposed penalties of $147,000 for hazards associated with divers not being trained, divers not being accompanied by another diver with continuous visual contact, and using air hoses not rated for diving. OSHA defines a willful violation as one committed with plain indifference to or intentional disregard for employees' safety and health.

Located about 16 miles due east from Sapelo Island, Gray's Reef National Marine Sanctuary is a haven for a marine life and a heaven for divers and anglers.

It's also a 22-square-mile, 14,000-acre outdoor classroom for scientists.
"It is a unique habitat," said Gray's Reef Sanctuary Superintendent Georgia Sedberry. "It's close to the shore, it's only 60 feet deep and it's spectacular and accessible."

Led by Sedberry, researchers from Gray's Reef, a number of universities and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) recently collected enough data for a year's worth of homework. They gathered the information while aboard the Nancy Foster, a National Ocean and Atomospheric Administration (NOAA) research ship.

During a stint that began May 18 and continued until May 30, researchers and Foster crewmembers worked around the clock.

Until recently, the City of New Bedford, Massachusetts, had to operate with century-old reservoir survey data to support the city's decision making for economic development issues. Emerging technologies in GIS and autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) have presented a solid foundation on which to base a methodology for an accurate and modernized visualization of bathymetric data.

MIAMI - Paul Shultz was walking along the pier of a Key West marina when he saw what looked like a rotting tomato pounding against the rocks.

The Coast Guard investigator waded ankle-deep into the water to fish out the ocean rubbish: a bright red Nikon camera, small enough to fit in the palm of his hand. Its waterproof plastic case was covered with six months' worth of crusty sea growth, but the camera itself was almost pristine when he found it May 16.

The next stage of Cornwall's pioneering Wave Hub project is underway with excavation work to create the scheme's vital onshore electricity link. Contractors are digging a pit on Hayle beach, West Cornwall, to house a connecting block to join Wave Hub's offshore cable with onshore cables linked to a new electricity substation. When Wave Hub's 25km, 1,300-tonne sub-sea cable is laid later this summer, it will end inside the beach pit and be connected to cables through two ducts that have already been drilled through the sand dunes at Hayle. The cables will lead back to a substation being built on the other side of the dunes, and ultimately connect Wave Hub with the National Grid.

Fiber optics has become an ever increasing part of our daily lives and is partly responsible for delivering many of the modern conveniences to which we have become accustomed. Fibers deliver the data for our phone, internet and television and are in virtually every conceivable piece of high tech equipment. Fiber optics are also being increasingly deployed in harsh environments that range from space, to oil & gas down hole drilling to the deepest trenches of the ocean.
