It was decided to ask for the support of our industry as a whole, given the significance of Dan Wilson's lifelong work. The Santa Barbara Maritime Museum is excited about creating a special display with Purisima to supplement existing diving and early offshore oil industry exhibits.

All of us were excited about the possibility of ADCI membership sponsoring this unique display that will honor our industry and a man who dared to "think outside of the box." According to a new report released by Douglas Westwood on 10 August 2010, over 2200 commercial divers will be required to help build and develop Europe’s offshore wind sector over the next six years.

MarEx: What was the offshore oil industry like 40 years ago when you first started?

Simmons: The growth of the oil industry in the U.S. has been incredible since I first started raising venture capital back in the spring of 1969. Anything beyond 80 feet of water was considered not safe. But a small group of divers in the Santa Barbara Channel were trying to perfect mixed gas diving tables because many of them were on the edge of losing their lives at deeper levels.

Dismantling decommissioned oil-drilling platforms, wells and pipelines requires precision demolition techniques. OceanServer Technology reports that the National Research Council (NRC) of Canada has taken delivery of a new AUV. NRC is the Canadian Government's resource for research, development and technology-based innovation. ABERDEEN, Scotland & ZURICH, August 11, 2010 — In a pioneering research project, scientists at IBM and the University of Aberdeen have collaborated to "see" the structure of a marine compound from the deepest place on the Earth using an atomic force microscope (AFM). The results of the project open up new possibilities in biological research, which could lead to the faster development of new medicines.

Beachgoers, mariners, rescue workers, and response crews now have new information available when making decisions such as whether it is safe to head out to sea or where to find mariners in distress. NOAA partners within the Caribbean Integrated Coastal Ocean Observing System deployed a data buoy off Escambrón beach to provide data on winds, waves and currents to locals including the port of San Juan and the island’s Atlantic coast.

The first scientific mission using Sentry, a robot capable of diving 5,000 m, or 3.1 miles, into the ocean, was successfully completed by scientists and engineers from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) and the University of Washington (UW). The vehicle surveyed and helped locate several proposed deep-water sites for seafloor instruments that will be used in the National Science Foundation’s (NSF)’s planned Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI).
