Dr. Christian J. Lambertsen, who developed the first self-contained underwater breathing apparatus — scuba gear — while studying medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in the 1930s and '40s, died Feb. 11 at a retirement home in Newtown, Pa. He was 93.

Buster Crabb, was an experienced and talented diver that served during WWII as a Royal Navy frogman. While acting as a spy diver for the British Special Intelligence Service, he disappeared into the Portsmouth Harbor and was presumably never seen alive again. His body was reportedly found some time after his disappearance. However, some people believe that Buster survived whatever ordeal caused his disappearance.

According to Joe Beck of Armstrong Marine, the boat, which is one of three the company is building for the Navy, is a dive-assist boat that will be used as a platform to make in-water repairs to fast-attack submarines and guided-missile submarines attached to the 5th Fleet.

Researchers at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute are done spending valuable time heading out to sea on routine monitoring missions, and they have the autonomous underwater robot to prove it. A team of marine researchers there has developed what they are calling the Gulper automatic underwater vehicle (AUV) that operates autonomously far out to sea, planning its own experiments and negotiating ocean depths without human input.
