I was waiting for a ferry to cross the Hudson River from Manhattan, New York to Weehauken, New Jersey when I noticed a barge moored to a pier north of the ferry terminal. It sported a large red and white divers down flag and the logo of a commercial diving company. I wondered what their current project included, until I looked at the pilings that supported the pier and the building that projected out over the water. Many pilings were fragments of their original size and all looked in need of replacement. This scene replayed in my mind the time Tamara Brown, president of Divers Academy of the Eastern Seaboard (DAES), told me pier restoration is one of the many facets of the commercial diving industry that is fueling a need for divers;a need she is finding difficult to fill. She said, "I cannot fill all the requests I get for divers. I send out a list of our graduates to the dive companies. They get the list and call me to tell me all the people on the list are currently employed."

Old Man River scored an inning Thursday against the Portland ship salvaging crew that has been working since May 5 to float and salvage Inland Navigation Co.'s petroleum barge "Port of Longview" that exploded and sank at the Port of Pasco last Dec. 16.
At the critical moment when partners Harold Maiken and Tom Ammerman of Commercial Divers Inc. and their crew of five marine salvage divers were about to move the crumpled hull downstream, the Columbia's near-flood stage current took over.

Subsea leakages from underwater production facilities may have significant environmental and economical consequences. There is a wide range of different technologies available for detection of subsea leakages, depending on the type of application and approach to leak detection. The two most common approaches to direct subsea-leak detection are inspection/surveying, where sensors are attached to mobile units such as remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), and continuous monitoring, where the sensors are permanently installed at the seabed. For the latter case, there are several different types of leak-detection technologies, depending on whether templates or pipelines are to be monitored. While most subsea facilities are monitored by flow-measurement devices that can typically detect leaks that are greater than a few percent of overall flow, this paper addresses direct methods of leak detection suitable for smaller leaks.

Prof. Mark Patterson of the Virginia Institute of Marine Science will manage logistics for the 4th International RoboBoat Competition, scheduled next week in Virginia Beach. Patterson, a marine biologist with patents in autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) technology, is winner of the Marine Technology Society's 2008 Lockheed Martin Award for Ocean Science & Engineering. Intellian Technologies has unveiled its largest VSAT antenna together with an upgrade to its antennas for the growing maritime broadband and satellite TV markets. Offshore Systems UK has introduced what it claims is a groundbreaking new relay output module; this enables modules of up to eight isolated power relays to be controlled by an NMEA 2000 network.
