In the late 1970s contracts for diving work were awarded to diving contractors, who hired vessels that could support the activity. Divers judged a DP vessel by its ‘footprint’ (the movement that a clump weight made on the seabed) and the number of times they had an alert to stop the work or get back to the surface because there was a ‘run off’. In 1980 the first guidance document was produced with the DP operational requirements from a diving contractor’s perspective.

The industry body which represents the UK’s subsea sector has appointed a new chief executive. Neil Gordon will take over the reins at Subsea UK at the beginning of July 2011.
