An Aberdeen based engineer has become one of the first recipients of a new £7,500 scholarship, awarded by subsea industry body Subsea UK. Yasaman Zirakzadeh, a senior electronic engineer at Aker Solutions is one of two subsea engineers to have been recognised with the grant. Darren Brown, a development engineer for First Subsea in Lancaster, will also be supported through his studies.

Rachael Miller comes to IYRS to talk about The Rozalia Project, a unique effort focused on cleaning the oceans and picking up plastics and non-biodegradable marine debris—one piece at a time. As executive director of the project, Miller will talk about the problem of marine debris in an exciting, interactive audience challenge and what we, as sailors, can do about the problem. She also brings the story of the organization’s mothership, the 60-foot sailing research vessel American Promise, and the work done onboard collecting debris using a VideoRay ROV (remotely operated vehicle).

NOAA Ship Rainier has begun a month long survey of the sea floor near Alaska's Prince of Wales Island as part of a multi-year effort to update nautical charts for the area. In addition to supporting marine navigation, data acquired by the 231-foot hydrographic survey vessel will also support marine ecosystem studies and improve inundation models for areas vulnerable to tsunamis.

Technip was awarded by Valiant Causeway Limited a lump sum contract, worth approximately €33 million, for the Causeway field development. GC Rieber Shipping has signed a two year contract for its second subsea newbuild with the Mexican company Oceanografia. The vessel, which will be named "Polar Queen", has recently been handed over from the Spanish shipyard Freire Shipyard, and the contract will start up in November. Three of the four vessels in the Company's newbuilding program are thus delivered and all of them are on hire. - With the whole fleet engaged, we are very well positioned going forward, says Irene Waage Basili, CEO of the company. Oceanografia has more than forty years experience in offshore contracting and operates a substantial fleet of owned and chartered vessels in the Gulf of Mexico. "Polar Queen" will operate on a contract for the Mexican state oil company PEMEX.

Seaglider can now be outfitted with a larger set of fairings that significantly increases the UUV's volume and mass payload capabilities. Payload mass is doubled over Seaglider's original design to four kilograms and payload volume has expanded 650 percent to more than 21,000 cubic centimeters, resulting in the ability to integrate both larger sensors and a greater number of sensors with Seaglider.
