The Colorado River Siphon was touted as an engineering marvel 100 years ago. And, indeed, when many engineering "marvels" of that era have been discarded, updated or become obsolete, the siphon is still being used today...
It was quite a sight. "Most Yuma residents were not used to the odd sight of divers in the middle of the desert," Steele wrote.... On Nov. 18, 1912, the whole town of Yuma, and beyond, celebrated with a special ceremony. Brooks pointed to an old photo of men standing inside the canal waiting for the water to start coming through when suddenly they see a wall of water coming toward them. The cameraman snapped the photo as the men dashed out of the way. Visit http://www.yumasun.com/news/water-74789-siphon-yuma.html to view the full article online. Gunmen stormed a ship supplying a Chevron Corp. offshore oil field, kidnapping three workers in an attack raising concerns over a possible unraveling amnesty deal in the crude-rich nation, authorities said Friday.
The attack happened Thursday night near Chevron’s massive Agbami oil field, operated by its Nigerian subsidiary about 70 nautical miles offshore from Bayelsa state in Nigeria’s oil-rich southern delta, officials said. Eight gunmen boarded the MV C-Endeavour, attacking the crew and taking the three sailors hostage, Chevron spokesman Kurt Glaubitz said. OSLO, Norway – The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD) and the University of Bergen have acquired samples from steep parts of the seabed on the Jan Mayen ridge between Norway and Iceland.
NPD is investigating the potential for petroleum in the region. According to Exploration Director Sissel Eriksen, the oldest of the samples appear to be 260 million years old. "We had hoped, but not expected, to find such old sedimentary rocks near Jan Mayen," Eriksen said. "The impact of volcanic rocks in the area is less than we previously thought – volcanic rocks generally do not have a potential for oil and gas."
