The ADCI Commercial Diving Hall of Fame was established in 2004 with the first inductees being those persons who had previously received either the John B. Galletti or Tom Devine Memorial Awards. The Hall of Fame is intended to "recognize and honor individuals whose dedication and accomplishments have significantly contributed to commercial diving through a life time of dedication." UnderWater magazine is seeking feature stories and photography covering subjects of broad significance to the commercial diving industry. City native Rhonda Moniz, an underwater cinematographer, diving safety officer and pilot and engineer for remotely operated vehicles, has been chosen "explorer in residence" at the Ocean Explorium on Union Street.
Moniz is founder and director of operations of Benthic Exploration, a company on County Street specializing in marine technology.
Moniz has been a part of several expeditions around the world, including some with famed ocean explorer Dr. Robert Ballard, who found the sunken RMS Titanic in 1985.

AN AQUATIC robot developed by mechatronic experts at the University of Sydney will audit Western Australia’s Ningaloo coast.

For almost 50 years, the deep-diving Alvin has been exploring the ocean floor — even retrieving a lost nuclear bomb between some notable scientific discoveries.
Now, the Navy-owned, civilian-operated science vessel is being refitted with a tougher new hull designed by Southwest Research Institute — one that will allow it to reach 99 percent of the ocean floor, instead of the approximately 60 percent it can explore now.

The total number of offshore rigs under contract has shown a high degree of stability over the past eight months. Contracted floaters, rigs capable of deepwater drilling, have not budged relative to the fourth quarter’s average. Contracted jackups have fallen by 5 rigs versus the fourth quarter. But both jackups and floaters are in better shape than the third quarter. Looking ahead, oil field service companies like Schlumberger and Transocean recently made comments that hinted of further strengthening in the offshore markets both globally and in the Gulf of Mexico

Cal Dive International, Inc. (NYSE:DVR) announced that it has been awarded a contract by Pemex Exploración y Producción for the installation of a 20 inch subsea pipeline located in the Abkatun Pol Chuc Field in 73 meters of water. The contract is expected to generate total revenue of approximately $46 million and will utilize two of the Company’s key assets. The offshore construction is expected to commence in the second quarter 2012.

US authorities are reluctant to discuss the possibility of leakage from permanently or temporarily abandoned wells, making increased regulation unlikely.
The Idle Iron NTL issued to operators in October 2010 has not so much changed the procedure for dealing with non-producing wells in the Gulf of Mexico as it has clarified definitions and concentrated minds.
