To salvage a ship from such a depth was a risky gamble that J. F. Swanberg, President of the Elliot Bay Dry Dock Company, could not afford to lose. Given the depth of the Kitsap, many experienced salvors steered clear of going after this job. If the ship had sunk in a shallower location, a diver would have likely been sent below to make an inspection and see how the wreck lay. He could then assist in securing lift cables to the hull. But in these earlier days of "submarine" diving, a hardhat diver rarely went much deeper than 100 to 150 feet due to the limitations of their manual air pump system and due to the increased risks of decompression sickness at the greater depths.

A luxury cruise ship was evacuated safely yesterday after striking a massive iceberg in the North Atlantic.
And oil rig workers escaped without injury after the helicopter transporting them to an offshore rig was forced to ditch in stormy conditions. The dramatic incidents were played out as part of two training exercises at the National Maritime College of Ireland’s state-of-the-art training facilities in Ringaskiddy, Co Cork. The college has a 360-degree ship-bridge simulator which can be programmed to mimic any kind of ship sailing into the world’s largest ports. The students were put in control of a large cruise ship programmed to strike an iceberg, and take on water. They had to co-ordinate the emergency response and organise the evacuation of the ship’s crew and passengers. The French Government announced its decision last week to award the Iberdrola-Eole-RES consortium exclusive rights to develop a 500 MW offshore wind project in the area of Saint-Brieuc, off the coast of Brittany.
The project is expected to generate some 2,000 jobs and play a key role in developing an offshore wind industry in France. The vessel is 110 m (361 ft) long, 22 m (72 ft) wide, and due for delivery in 2013. Konsgberg’s consignment comprises both an ‘overboard’ system and a moonpool system. It is designed to handle work class ROVs with or without a tether management system to water depths below 4,000 m (13,123 ft). The total number of offshore rigs under contract has shown a high degree of stability over the past eight months. Contracted floaters, rigs capable of deepwater drilling, have not budged relative to the fourth quarter’s average. Contracted jackups have fallen by 5 rigs versus the fourth quarter. But both jackups and floaters are in better shape than the third quarter. Looking ahead, oil field service companies like Schlumberger and Transocean recently made comments that hinted of further strengthening in the offshore markets both globally and in the Gulf of Mexico.

Department of Energy (DOE) grant recipient, Ocean Renewable Power Company (ORPC) is now licensed to construct, operate, and maintain its 5-unit, 300 kW TidGen Power System in Cobscook Bay, Maine. In 2010, DOE awarded $10 million to ORPC’s $21-million TidGen Power System Commercialization Project.
This project significantly advances the technical, operational, and environmental goals of the tidal energy industry at large and accelerates ocean power technology developed, manufactured, and deployed by a U.S. company in domestic waters. I wondered if the same thing could be done using an AUV (autonomous underwater vehicle). So I ran some experiments using our OpenROV! We took a waterproof digital camera to the touch pool at the aquarium in SF and shot a few videos of a starfish. We extracted some stills and used 123D Catch to generate the model seen here.
