The ADCI Commercial Diving Hall of Fame was established in 2004 with the first inductees being those persons who had previously received either the John B. Galletti or Tom Devine Memorial Awards. The Hall of Fame is intended to "recognize and honor individuals whose dedication and accomplishments have significantly contributed to commercial diving through a life time of dedication." Floating Liquefied Natural Gas (FLNG) is a concept that has received serious attention from major companies involved in gas production since the 1990s. The idea behind the concept is simple: the ability to convert natural gas into LNG in an offshore environment will allow remote, and previously un-commercial, gas fields to be exploited.
After many years of research and development, it is still likely to be a few more years before we finally see a working FLNG vessel operating on a remote gas field. However, thanks to a number of FLNG projects currently in development around the world we are now getting a very good idea of what shape such a vessel might look like.

China plans to recruit four to six oceanauts in 2013 as the country vigorously explores the deep sea.
"The national deep-sea base is working on the standards of selection, training and rating of oceanauts," Liu Baohua, director of the base's administrative center, said Thursday.
China currently has three oceanauts -- Ye Cong, Tang Jialing and Fu Wentao, Liu said.
The construction of an expansive deep-sea base, designed to be a state-level oceanic technical support center, is expected to begin later this year or in early 2013, Liu said.
He added researchers with the national base were working on relevant technologies, such as a simulation system of high-pressure oceanic environment and application tools of the manned submersible.

DOWNSVILLE – A New York City Department of Environmental Protection contractor began to mobilize equipment that will be used during the underwater removal of suspected fuel oil from an object buried under the Pepacton Reservoir in Delaware County.
How and when the tank got there in a reservoir that was built in the 1930s is a mystery, said Assistant DEP Commissioner David Warne.

At 7 a.m. on Thursday morning, June 21, the Cape Fear Community College’s ocean-going research vessel, the Dan Moore, left port in Beaufort, N.C. In just a few hours, the vessel was miles out of sight of land, making its return voyage to Wilmington after a four-day cruise.
Students enrolled in CFCC’s marine science curriculum were aboard and prepared to launch a side scan sonar, a marine technology device that captures images on the ocean’s floor using acoustic signals. The students have studied the sonar technology in the classroom, but the Dan Moore provides them with a unique opportunity to put the theory to practice.

A team of international geoscientists will set out on a sea expedition to explore submarine canyons in the central Mediterranean Sea.

Submarine canyons are large and deep valleys eroded in the seafloor. They are poorly studied features that host a wide diversity of marine life. The study of submarine canyons is important because they transfer nutrients and pollutants from coastal waters to the deep ocean and can be a focus of submarine landslides and associated tsunamis.

Submersible Jiaolong set a new national dive record on Wednesday after reaching 7,062 meters below sea level during its fifth dive into the Mariana Trench. The Jiaolong got three water samples, two sediment samples and one organism sample, placed a marker, and made several experiments on the sea floor 7,062 meters deep from the sea surface.

A lot of things can go wrong when you’re on top of the water steering a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) several feet below the surface.
The vehicle might stall — become "dead in the water," as they say. It might not pick up the objects it’s supposed to. It might even break apart.
Nearly two dozen Sea Cadets from Ventura County experienced some version of all of those when they built and then tested their handcrafted ROVs at Naval Base Ventura County (NBVC) earlier this year.

THE North Sea’s booming subsea sector is set for a massive 10,000 jobs bonanza over the next 12 months.
But a new report by the industry’s trade body Subsea UK has warned that increasing problems in recruiting suitably qualified personnel could stand in the way of the jobs boost target being fully realised.

SYDNEY – Australia’s government on Sunday said it has awarded 12 new petroleum exploration permits for off the coast of Western Australia and Victoria state. Among the eight companies to win the permits–the tender process received 46 bids–are BHP Billiton, Bass Strait Oil Company, WHL Energy and Woodside Petroleum.
"Liquefied natural gas exports are forecast to significantly expand in Australia over the next two decades," said Martin Ferguson, resources minister in a release.
"With these new permits, we hope to see discovery of new oil and gas reserves, which could translate into more jobs and growth for our economy."

HAVANA, Cuba — For 30 years, generous oil subsidies from Moscow kept the lights on for Fidel Castro’s Cuban Revolution. Until the Soviet Union went kaput.
Now, Russian state oil companies may be coming to Cuba’s rescue again.
Oil industry journals reported this week that a Soviet-built, Norwegian-owned drilling platform is headed for Cuban waters this summer, under contract with Moscow-based state company Zarubezhneft.
The company has hired the rig, called the Songa Mercur, at a cost of $88 million for nearly a year, with plans to begin drilling in November. That should be enough time to poke plenty of holes in search of Cuba’s elusive undersea oil fields, which are thought to hold billions of barrels of crude but have yet to yield a decent strike.

Rotterdam - Imtech Marine announces that Elkon (Istanbul), member of Imtech Marine , signed a contract for the design and supply of the complete electrical systems to power three Turkish Navy Auxiliary vessels. The vessels, consisting of one Submarine Rescue Mother Ship (MoShip) and two Rescue and Towing Ships (RATships) will be built by Istanbul Shipyard in Tuzla Turkey and are scheduled to be delivered to the Turkish Navy by mid of 2015.

Norwegian survey and positioning specialists, iSURVEY Group AS, has chosen to invest in a SPRINT (Subsea Precision Reference Inertial Navigation Technology) system from Sonardyne International to support its ROV surveys and deep water marine construction activities.
The purchase follows trials of the system in the North Sea during which SPRINT was subjected to a detailed technical appraisal and was shown to deliver immediate cost savings and major operational benefits.

In 2004 KCF Technologies was funded, through a Navy Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) project (N04-T020), to create a tether-based underwater positioning system for a variety of underwater applications including positioning vehicles in mine countermeasure applications. Through several years of development, KCF created a technology that met the challenges. The resulting commercial product, Smart Tether, sold its 100th system in 2011 and is marking three years since the technology was first commercially available.
