The research foundation looking for the wreck of the famous revolutionary war ship Bonhomme Richard is at it again. A U.S. Navy oceanographic ship is headed for the North Sea off the coast of Britain this week for another attempt at locating the remains of a warship commanded by U.S. naval hero John Paul Jones in an epic 1779 sea battle. Jones’s ship was badly damaged and sank 36 hours after it defeated and captured the H.M.S. Serapis, a much more powerful Royal Navy frigate. Historians and marine archaeologists have been hunting for the wreck for years.
The U.S. Military Sealift Command’s oceanographic survey ship, the U.S.N.S. Henson, is enroute to the North Sea. It will be joined later by a French Navy mine hunter vessel. There will be divers aboard the French ship to dive on any wreck sites uncovered.

The world’s last underwater research laboratory could be shut down for good, lacking a few million dollars in federal funding.
The Aquarius Reef Base — part of the National Undersea Research Program, a deep-water study program run by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency (NOAA) for the past 20 years — has provided a unique and invaluable environment for everything from marine biology research to the testing of new technologies. Recently, the base even hosted astronauts simulating an asteroid mission, the lab’s 16th collaboration with NASA.
