The first call came in about 9 a.m. Monday morning (October 29, 2012) as winds from the leading edge of the storm system began pushing tidal waters inland, past the barrier islands and toward Berkeley Township and other Jersey Shore communities.
For the next 52 hours, as Hurricane Sandy, approached, made landfall, and passed overhead, bringing with it record tides and floodwaters that reached up to two miles inland, the members of the all volunteer Berkeley Township Under Water Search and Rescue (BTUSAR) Squad 86 worked tirelessly to rescue local residents.

Initial structural inspections on Tuesday determined that the bridge was safe for use by emergency vehicles. NCDOT and contractors working on NC 12 south of the bridge are using it to access Pea Island. The inspection did indicate repairs are needed on tension cables within the bridge deck on several spans, and the department is working to award an emergency contract for these repairs.

The first memorial to military divers was unveiled last month at the Navy Diving and Salvage Training Center in Panama City.
A similar monument is in the works for the Washington Navy Yard — the site of the old diving school.
Organizers of the Panama City monument said the site is an appropriate place to pay homage to military diving because students will pass it every day.

NOAA post-storm response operations are
underway in the aftermath of Sandy. NOAA vessels are now conducting surveys to
speed the re-opening of waterways and aircraft are flying missions to capture
detailed imagery of coastal storm damage along affected portions of the U.S.
East Coast.

The Honourable Bernard Valcourt, Associate Minister of National Defence and Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency) (La Francophonie) and Member of Parliament for Madawaska-Restigouche, announced today that the Government of Canada is investing in important sonar technology for the Royal Canadian Navy's Maritime Coastal Defence Vessels.
"The Route Survey System is a valuable tool for our Navy crews in their coastal surveillance and patrols, giving them information that helps them to protect the sovereignty and security of our Canadian coasts, harbours, and shipping lanes," said Minister Valcourt. "Through this investment for our sailors, we are also investing in important Canadian technology and the creation of high-quality jobs in the technology sector."

The Quebec government has reportedly approved the sale of shipbuilder Davie Yards to London-based Zafiro Marine, which has a fleet of two offshore construction vessels and one diving support vessel. Last year Cecon ASA, which has three offshore construction vessels on order at Davie, announced that it had entered into a "strategic alliance" with Zafiro.

International oil services and technology firm AGR has recruited Chris Rayburn as Business Development Manager based near London.
In January AGR will move into new offices in Guildford, allowing up to 50 per cent expansion of its London team as the Norwegian firm focuses on growth in the UK.

FMC Technologies, Inc. announced that it has received an order from Total E&P Angola for additional subsea equipment for the Pazflor field. The contract has an estimated value of $33 million in revenue. The Pazflor field is located in Block 17 offshore Angola. The initial subsea systems delivered to Total for the Pazflor field have been in operation for more than a year. FMC Technologies’ scope of additional supply for complementary development under today’s contract includes three additional subsea well systems.

Last week, during the EEA grant conference arranged by Innovation Norway and CDTI in Bergen, the Norwegian company Langlee Wave Power and Repnaval Shipyard (Zamakona Yards) signed an agreement for the development of wave power in the Canary islands. The two companies will file a common application to the EEA grants for development of renewable energy in Spain.

Transocean has secured 10-year contracts from Shell for four dynamically positioned ultra-deepwater newbuild drillships. Shipyard delivery for the first drillship is scheduled for mid-2015. The remaining three drillships are expected to be delivered from the shipyard at approximately six-month intervals thereafter. The contracts are expected to commence in 2015 and 2016.

An American-owned specialist marine salvage and wreck removal company Titan Salvage alongside with Italian firm Micoperi have been awarded a Costa Concordia wreck removal contract in April. Together they presented a plan to refloat and tow away the cruise ship to one of the Italian ports where she will likely be scrapped.

The 630MW scheme, located in the Thames Estuary, will be the world’s largest offshore wind farm. The development has been under construction since March 2011 and 15 of the 175 turbines have now been installed, with construction on scheudle to be finished by the end of the year. The 175 turbines will produce enough power to supply over 470,000 UK homes with electricity.

As part of the Obama Administration’s all-of-the-above strategy to expand safe and responsible domestic energy production, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar and Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) Director Tommy P. Beaudreau announced that BOEM has reached agreement on a lease for commercial wind energy development in federal waters that covers 96,430 acres approximately 11 nautical miles off the coast of Delaware.

The American Maritime Partnership (AMP) has written President Obama saying that the U.S. Maritime Industry will not oppose Jones Act waivers that are necessary to facilitate the delivery of petroleum products into the regions affected by Hurricane Sandy.
AMP was officially launched on February 22, 2011,but traces its roots back to September 27, 1995, when a number of companies and trade associations representing the domestic maritime industry founded the Maritime Cabotage Task Force ("MCTF") to refute a well-financed disinformation campaign aimed at eliminating America's most long-standing maritime laws, including the Jones Act.
