MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Dear Industry Stakeholder,

I want to formally notify you that ADCI Board Director, Mr. Frank Hazen will be retiring from Triton Diving Services on 20 September 2013.  I think I can speak for all that have had the pleasure to work with Frank that his presence will be missed at industry meetings, Underwater Intervention, and most recently on the Board of Directors.  Frank’s wealth of experience and years in the industry never clouded his ability to embrace the input of those his junior and no one was better than him at "checking the ego at the door".  In simple terms, Frank is a great guy that will be missed.

In his resignation letter to the ADCI Office, Frank wrote:  "It has been a great pleasure and honor to have served on the ADCI Board of Directors.  I wish the Association the best in its efforts to keep our industry on the leading edge of safety and education."

On behalf of the Board and the Association, I want to wish him all the best with his retirement or any other endeavor he ventures into.

Triton’s seat on the Board will be filled by Maureen Bodron.  Anyone who has done work for Chevron in the Gulf has known Maureen for years.  Some years back, Maureen moved to the contractor side of the fence.  Maureen’s professionalism and knowledge of the industry will only complement the ADCI Board of Directors.  I personally look forward to working with her.

This notice is being sent as a notification to all General Member Companies that are engaged in saturation diving operations that the requirement for having an emergency evacuation system (HRC or SPHL) went into effect on 19 July 2013. 

The requirements for Emergency Evacuation Systems can be found in Section 6.12.3 (Page 125) of the Consensus Standards for Commercial Diving and Underwater Operations (6th ed.). 

The requirement for an EES had been annotated by a superscript "3"–compliance required after 24 months from formal public release of the Consensus Standards for Commercial Diving and Underwater Operations (6th ed.)". The 24 month period ended on 19 July 2013. 

Additionally, all diving bells, submersible decompression Chambers, and closed bells had new compliance requirements that were also annotated with by a superscript "3"-compliance required after 24 months from formal public release of the Consensus Standards for Commercial Diving and Underwater Operations. 

The new requirements for diving bells, submersible decompression chambers, and closed bells can be found in Section 6.12.2.3 (Page 124) of the Consensus Standards for Commercial Diving and Underwater Operations (6th ed.). 

These new requirements went into effect on 19 July 2013.

UnderWater magazine is seeking feature stories and photography covering subjects of broad significance to the commercial diving industry. Possible article topics include, but are not limited to: safety, new techniques, new equipment, equipment reviews, recent projects, etc. Special attention will be given to articles highlighting safety; however, all topics of general interest to diving contractors will be considered.  The 2014 ADCI Scholarship Fund Raffle will feature a KM 37 – Stainless Steel (SS) helmet, a state-of- the-art diving harness, and Miller weight belt.  The helmet was donated by Kirby Morgan, and will be signed by Bev Morgan at U.I. 2014.  The diving harness and weight belt was donated by Divers Supply, Inc.

Tickets for the raffle are $25.00 a piece, and can be purchased from the ADCI office and at U.I. 2014, prior to the last day of the show on 13 February 2014.

For those who are not familiar with the ADCI Scholarship Fund, the fund was set up to assist students with pursuing their higher educational or vocational goals with an award of $4000.00.  Eligibility requirements are provided with the formal announcement that goes out each year.  The Chairperson for the ADCI Scholarship Committee is Mrs. Dori Ritter of Dive Commercial International, Inc.

Any ADCI member company can sponsor a student for award consideration by the Scholarship Committee.   I challenge all ADCI member companies to provide a contribution to the fund.  No amount is too small.  It is our one chance to give back to the community to support our most valuable asset, today’s youth.

fleet of underwater robots is descending into waters off the east coast to collect data that could help improve storm intensity forecasts during future hurricane seasons. Aquarius Reef Base off Key Largo is under new management and is being used for the first time in almost a year. Florida International University took over operating the 43-foot-long underwater laboratory in January from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which closed the base citing budget cuts.

A Florida based treasure hunting firm has discovered a 450-year-old ship that wrecked off the Dominican coast. Among its valuable cargo -- the single largest cache of 16th century pewter tableware ever discovered. The ship was also carrying extremely rare Spanish silver coins from the late 1400's through the mid 1500's and several gold artifacts. This unprecedented find of 16th century pewter will re-write history books, as many of the maker's marks stamped into the fine pewter have never been seen before. While the value of the gold and silver recovered is easily determined, surprisingly, experts place the value of this four and a half century old pewter collection into the millions. The collection includes plates, platters, porringers, salts and flagons in an array of sizes and styles.
