MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
I want to formally notify you that ADCI Board Director, Mr. Frank Hazen will be retiring from Triton Diving Services on 20 September 2013.  I think I can speak for all that have had the pleasure to work with Frank that his presence will be missed at industry meetings, Underwater Intervention, and most recently on the Board of Directors.  Frank’s wealth of experience and years in the industry never clouded his ability to embrace the input of those his junior and no one was better than him at "checking the ego at the door".  In simple terms, Frank is a great guy that will be missed.

In his resignation letter to the ADCI Office, Frank wrote:  "It has been a great pleasure and honor to have served on the ADCI Board of Directors.  I wish the Association the best in its efforts to keep our industry on the leading edge of safety and education."

On behalf of the Board and the Association, I want to wish him all the best with his retirement or any other endeavor he ventures into.

Triton’s seat on the Board will be filled by Maureen Bodron.  Anyone who has done work for Chevron in the Gulf has known Maureen for years.  Some years back, Maureen moved to the contractor side of the fence.  Maureen’s professionalism and knowledge of the industry will only complement the ADCI Board of Directors.  I personally look forward to working with her.

This notice is being sent as a notification to all General Member Companies that are engaged in saturation diving operations that the requirement for having an emergency evacuation system (HRC or SPHL) went into effect on 19 July 2013. 

The requirements for Emergency Evacuation Systems can be found in Section 6.12.3 (Page 125) of the Consensus Standards for Commercial Diving and Underwater Operations (6th ed.). 

The requirement for an EES had been annotated by a superscript "3"–compliance required after 24 months from formal public release of the Consensus Standards for Commercial Diving and Underwater Operations (6th ed.)". The 24 month period ended on 19 July 2013. 

Additionally, all diving bells, submersible decompression Chambers, and closed bells had new compliance requirements that were also annotated with by a superscript "3"-compliance required after 24 months from formal public release of the Consensus Standards for Commercial Diving and Underwater Operations. 

The new requirements for diving bells, submersible decompression chambers, and closed bells can be found in Section 6.12.2.3 (Page 124) of the Consensus Standards for Commercial Diving and Underwater Operations (6th ed.). 

These new requirements went into effect on 19 July 2013.

Implementation of Certification and Equipment Requirements

UnderWater magazine is seeking feature stories and photography covering subjects of broad significance to the commercial diving industry.  The 2014 ADCI Scholarship Fund Raffle will feature a KM 37 – Stainless Steel (SS) helmet, a state-of- the-art diving harness, and Miller weight belt.  The helmet was donated by Kirby Morgan, and will be signed by Bev Morgan at U.I. 2014.  The diving harness and weight belt was donated by Divers Supply, Inc.

Tickets for the raffle are $25.00 a piece, and can be purchased from the ADCI office and at U.I. 2014, prior to the last day of the show on 13 February 2014.

For those who are not familiar with the ADCI Scholarship Fund, the fund was set up to assist students with pursuing their higher educational or vocational goals with an award of $4000.00.  Eligibility requirements are provided with the formal announcement that goes out each year.  The Chairperson for the ADCI Scholarship Committee is Mrs. Dori Ritter of Dive Commercial International, Inc.

Any ADCI member company can sponsor a student for award consideration by the Scholarship Committee.   I challenge all ADCI member companies to provide a contribution to the fund.  No amount is too small.  It is our one chance to give back to the community to support our most valuable asset, today’s youth.

A new memorial is in place for an Arkansas native killed in Afghanistan, but it’s not easy to find.

The memorial for Navy SEAL Chief Petty Officer Adam Brown is at the bottom of Lake Ouachita. A group of scuba divers led the initiative to honor Brown with the memorial, which was placed in the lake last month.

The downed aircraft was one of two F-16 fighter jets from the 113th Wing, D.C. Air National Guard that clipped wings mid-air during a routine training mission 35 miles southeast of Chincoteague, Va., Aug. 1.
The other aircraft involved in the incident was able to fly back to Joint Base Andrews in Md. without further incident.

The Marine Advanced Technology Education (MATE) Center's 12th-annual international student underwater robotics competition took place this summer in Federal Way, WA. The competition challenged K-12, community college, and university students from around the world to design and build remote operated vehicles (ROVs) to accomplish underwater tasks.

About 500 miles from the Philippines, Project Recover searches for aircraft shot down during one of World War II’s fiercest battles in the region. The organization behind the project, BentProp Project[1], is focused on finding the remains of U.S. soldiers and bringing them back to the United States. This summer, the project received assistance from Remus, an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) equipped with side-scan sonar and advanced imaging systems.

Mike Borrow, who has died aged 84, founded Underwater Marine Equipment (UMEL), a firm specialising in subsea equipment which became best-known for the development of the Jim suit — an atmospheric diving suit which was widely used by the offshore oil industry and featured in the James Bond film For Your Eyes Only.

Buccaneer Energy Ltd. has secured some serious financial backing, and that could mean a more secure future for its oil and gas exploration activity in Cook Inlet.
