INDUSTRY NEWS
Commercial diving businesses should always push for better safety, but sometimes learning the truth about their safety compliance can be tough. The Association of Diving Contractors International is a key resource for companies hoping to identify problem points, as their official audits can help businesses find ways to improve.
However, operators that aren’t familiar with the audit process could be concerned, or even nervous, with what the auditor will find. In the latest issue of Underwater Magazine, Diving Consultant Captain Jon Hazelbaker offered reassurance, explaining that the audit is not a "pass/fail" process but a complex assessment of a company.

The ADCI is now releasing its Supervisor Nitrox Endorsement Examination.  This examination is available to all current ADCI certified supervisors.  On the revised Supervisor Exam Application, which can be downloaded here, qualified candidates can check the box for "Nitrox Endorsement."

The cost of the examination and new certification card is $150.00. A tutorial is included in the examination package.

It should be noted that a tutorial is not a course on Nitrox (enriched air) Diving Operations.  Candidates should already have knowledge and experience with Nitrox operations, prior to undertaking the exam or supervising a commercial nitrox diving operation.

INTERNATIONAL NEWS
In March 1968, a Soviet Golf II submarine carrying nuclear ballistic missiles exploded and sank 1,500 nautical miles northwest of Hawaii. Five months later, the US government discovered the wreckage—and decided to steal it. So began Project AZORIAN, one of the most absurdly ambitious operations the CIA has ever conceived. The potential payoff of Project AZORIAN was tremendous—a detailed look at Soviet weapons capabilities, and maybe some highly coveted cryptographic equipment. But the 1,750-tonne submarine had sunk to a depth of 16,500 feet, and a massive recovery ship was needed to haul it up.

Dong Hai Jiu 101 departed for the MH370 search area on April 11, carrying Phoenix International’s Remora III remotely operated vehicle (ROV) which will be used in the recovery of the lost SLH‑ProSAS‑60 tow system.
Namely, on March 21, the failure of a tow cable connector resulted in the loss of the SLH‑ProSAS‑60 towfish and the attached depressor. Another towfish was lost earlier this year after it hit a mud volcano.

A year ago, researchers in two small submarines were exploring a seamount — an underwater, flat-topped mountain — off the Pacific coast of Panama when they noticed a dense cloud of sediment extending 4 to 10 meters above the seafloor. One of the submarines approached closer, and the scientists could soon see what was kicking up the cloud: thousands of small, red crabs that were swarming together like insects

The Archerfish ROV is an aptly named remotely operated vehicle, inspired by the archerfish, that is capable of locating and destroying sea mines by blasting them with an explosive charge.
The result of several years of research and development, the Archerfish stands out from other anti-mine submersible vehicles thanks to its ability to be deployed not just from sea vessels but also from helicopters.

REGULATORY NEWS
The U.S. Department of Interior on Thursday issued new safety regulations designed to cut the risk of oil and natural gas explosions during offshore drilling operations.
The new "well control" guidelines, spurred by the 2010 Deepwater Horizon explosion that killed 11 people, will bolster design, manufacture, repair and maintenance requirements for oil well blowout preventers, or BOPs. That’s the same device that didn’t function properly on the BP Horizon rig, leading to the worst maritime oil spill in U.S. history.
