Upcoming Lecture by Dr. Steve Noll "South Florida's Water Past and Future" to be hosted by the Ft. Lauderdale Historical SocietyPrint this Article | Send to Colleague The Ft. Lauderdale Historical Society will be hosting a free lecture by Dr. Steve Noll, a senior lecturer with the Department of History at the University of Florida on Monday, May 12th from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m at the historical New River Inn, located at 231 SW 2nd Ave. The lecture is sponsored by the Florida Humanities Council. Dr. Noll will discuss the history of Florida’s water landscape, and the ever-evolving relationship Floridians have had with water and their environment. The lecture will focus on people’s relationship with water in Florida spanning from the Native Americans to the Europeans to American settlers, the effects of hurricanes on Florida, and the extraordinary transformations made to the Everglades that have redirected much of the state’s water out of our most environmentally significant resource. For those of you that have not been to the New River Inn, it is a beautifully preserved building that served as an inn from 1905 to 1955, and is now used as the museum for the Ft. Lauderdale Historical Society. The Inn is one of several buildings within the society’s historical campus. The society also has an extraordinary collection of historic photographs, maps, architectural drawings, and other memorabilia.
