Trustee Report #17

Print Print this Article | Send to Colleague

Schools are out and we are into SUMMER. Gotta love that 90-plus degree weather! Welcome to the 17th piece of my Trustee report series where I share a few notes and items from our national organization over the last month or so, and remind people who may have lapsed in their membership to rejoin and that (payment options are available). Please feel free to contact me at Trustee@FLASLA.org if you have any questions or concerns about ASLA issues.

One of the most important items is that SITES™ is all resolved. See Nancy Somerville’s letter below. GBCI will be handling SITES™ from now on and ASLA members will be getting breaks in pricing.

Governance and Administration
The call for committee service opened in the recent issue of LAND. The process will continue to improve through the use of Survey Monkey, and special communications will target student and emerging professional audiences. The call will close July 10.

Government Affairs
Government Affairs is now on Twitter and encourages ASLA members to follow us @ASLA_Advocacy to keep up with urgent advocacy news. Don’t miss out on critical information about free webinars, grants notices, and policy reports on issues important to the profession. If you need assistance with Twitter, contact Legislative Analyst Leighton Yates.

Resource Development
The Campaign for the ASLA Center for Landscape Architecture has raised $816,323, which is roughly 54 percent of the new goal of $1.5 million. To date, firms have pledged $282,797, ASLA chapters have pledged $361,229, with the balance donated by individual members and friends of ASLA. To see who is supporting the campaign, please click here. If you or your firm would like to join the list of donors, please contact Director of Stakeholder Relations and Resource Development Ron Sears.

SITES™
Dear ASLA Members, We are excited to share news regarding the next phase for the Sustainable Sites Initiative™ (SITES™). ASLA and the University of Texas at Austin have transferred ownership of the SITES Rating System to Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI), the certification body for the LEED green building program from U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), and GBCI is now accepting applications for project certification under the SITES v2 Rating System.* We are confident that GBCI's leadership of SITES will take the program to the next level and ensure its future growth and influence. ASLA will continue to contribute to the development of SITES as a member of the SITES advisory council and will support the Initiative through ongoing education and promotion activities. ASLA members will continue to be involved on the technical committees that support the Rating System. The role of ASLA, The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center at The University of Texas at Austin, and the United States Botanic Garden in the development of SITES will be recognized in SITES materials and communications. ASLA members are entitled to discounts for all SITES materials, certification, and, when developed, credentialing. We encourage you to share this exciting news and the press release with your colleagues and clients. Interested project teams should visit http://sustainablesites.org/ to learn more.

Sincerely,

Nancy C. Somerville, Hon. ASLA
ASLA Executive Vice President and CEO

*The SITES Rating System is produced by the Green Business Certification Inc., which owns exclusive rights to the SITES Rating System, its publications and trademarks. The material on which the SITES Rating System is based was developed through a collaborative, interdisciplinary effort of the American Society of Landscape Architects Fund, The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center at The University of Texas at Austin, and the United States Botanic Garden.
