Redistricting Update
Yesterday, the Florida Supreme Court ordered that at least eight congressional districts be redrawn because of violations of the Fair Districts constitutional amendment. The order will require the Legislature to redraw congressional districts represented by Corrine Brown, David Jolly, Kathy Castor, Ted Deutch, Lois Frankel, Mario Diaz-Balart, Carlos Curbelo and Ileana Ros-Lehtinen "on an expedited basis." The order could also affect neighboring districts.

FLAPC Update
The Friends of Landscape Architecture Political Committee has sent out its annual membership reminders and will undertake its big fundraising push at the FLASLA Annual Conference in late July. Following the conference, the FLAPC will contribute to a number of campaigns, as determined by the Board. If you have not joined FLAPC or renewed your membership for 2015, now is the time to do so. Contributions to the FLAPC allow landscape architects to create new allies and show appreciation to those legislators that have assisted the profession.

Trails
SB 2514A, relating to the Department of Transportation (DOT) passed during the June Special Session. This bill creates the Shared Use Nonmotorized Trail Network, or SUN Trail. This program was funded in the FY 15/16 budget at $25 million. With the passage of this legislation and its accompanying funding provision in the budget, DOT will soon move forward with the implementation of this program. It is important for landscape architects to be actively involved in this program as it develops. FLASLA may want to consider a meeting with Secretary Boxold, Jim Wood, and/or others at DOT as this program gets off the ground, so that your input can be considered and any concerns you may have can be addressed.
