Historic Places Landscape Initiative - Acknowledging Landscapes

Print Print this Article | Send to Colleague

In 2013, the National Park Service initiated a series of conversations about the types of landscapes listed in the National Register of Historic Place with guidance on nominating landscapes and the issues (challenges) with landscape documentation and evaluation. These conversations were held via webinars and became the essence of the National Register Landscape Initiative (NRLI). An early consensus was reached among the participants that resulted in a strategy for revising, updating, and augmenting guidance for landscape nominations in the existing National Register.

Summarization of these webinar presentations by David Driapsa, FASLA yielded a written record and a tool that should encourage greater recognition of both significant and ordinary landscapes to the National Register standards.

As you will see, Driapsa’s summaries constitute the bulk of this dynamic publication and will serve to benefit many who struggle with issues related to the documentation and nomination of cultural landscapes to the National Register.

This publication came online June 19, 2017, and is available for download from the National Register of Historic Places Landscape Initiative at www.ncptt.nps.gov/blog/acknowledging-landscapes/
