The month of July brings us to our annual state conference, which is happening next week at the Hyatt Regency Coconut Point in Bonita Springs from July 25-28. Our full executive committee and association management team have been tirelessly planning for this big event for the past two years! With the excitement and buzz of conference time in the air, I would like to focus this President’s message on the treasure of volunteerism.

 

The Tellers Committee convened on June 26th to verify the annual ASLA election. Wendy Miller, FASLA, was elected 2019 president-elect. Also on the ballot was an amendment to the ASLA constitution to add an International Student member category; the amendment was approved.

 

The American Society of Landscape Architects, Florida Chapter is excited to announce a fundraising campaign to provide scholarships to students attending an accredited Landscape Architecture program at a Florida university. The challenge - a ten-year goal of $250,0000 to fund an endowment that will provide two $5,000 scholarships per year in perpetuity. The fundraising effort also has a stretch goal to fund two $5,000 scholarships during the ten years the endowment is built, awarding the first scholarships in 2020. Established in 2017, the American Society of Landscape Architects Florida Chapter Landscape Architecture Career Discovery Scholarship will be awarded annually to two incoming students enrolled in an accredited Landscape Architecture program at a Florida university. Scholarship recipients will exemplify the ideals of landscape architecture in scholarship, service, and ethics and show promise in the fields of landscape architectural design or research.
