Measles, a highly contagious respiratory infection that causes serious complications in about three of 10 people, has been grabbing headlines since last December’s outbreak at Disneyland. In January, the CDC reported 102 cases of measles in 14 states. One unconfirmed case was just reported in New Jersey. Measured against the approximately 600 cases reported in 2014, this year is on track to set a record for a disease that was declared eradicated in the United States in 2000.

Staffing is by far the largest expense the environmental services department incurs, typically accounting for 75–80 percent of total department spending. Jennifer Bresnick, HealthIT Analytics
In his annual budget request, President Obama will ask Congress for $1.2 billion to fight hospital acquired infections produced by superbugs, the antibiotic-resistant bacteria that are responsible for tens of thousands of deaths each year. With antibiotic stewardship becoming a hot topic among hospitals forking over financial penalties for preventable infections, the funding would provide a significant platform for health care providers to continue battling their insidious foe.
