Courage and Leadership – YES, they go Together!

As I think about our amazing 2023 AHVAP National Conference and Industry Partner Expo and reflect on all the amazing networking, learning, sharing, laughing, talking, and listening, this quote from Winston Churchill rings so true: “Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen.” There was so much positive energy during our time together that I cannot count all the wonderful moments.

What energy we had from our opening keynote by Dr. Hudson Garrett “Tip of the Spear: Sharpening Your Professional Sword to Unleash Your Fullest Potential,” which was followed by our keynote for day two by Dr. Pat Patton, “Not Now I’m Operating: Surgeon Led Value Analysis,” and was capped off our final keynote by Joe Machicote “Intentional Leadership: The Extraordinary Value Analysis Professional.” What an amazing line-up, and it was so exciting to see, feel, and experience the growth and excitement for Value Analysis and AHVAP. As I returned to Charlotte, my heart and mind were briming over with ideas, excitement, and the continued belief that AHVAP is on a path to provide what our industry and membership desperately need. And we stand ready to provide.

I am currently reading Dr. Kwadwo Kyeremanteng’s book “Unapologetic Leadership.” One of the leadership principles he shares in this book is “true leadership stems from creating change. Favor Action.” And as I reflect on our time together, I realize that our organization is full of professionals like those Kyeremanteng describes, those who favor action.

Our AHVAP burning platform is to be that value analysis voice proving "courage is contagious.” So, with every courageous leadership action we take, in addition to strengthening our own courage muscle, we also make everyone around us a little stronger and a little braver!

Value Analysis Professionals stand ready to lead with courage into our healthcare future.

Sincerely,

Karen Niven, MS, BSN, RN, CVAHP™
