Leadership
Few sports movies capture the essence of resilience and determination, quite like Rudy (1993). Based on the true story of Daniel “Rudy” Ruettiger, a young man with a dream to play football for the University of Notre Dame despite overwhelming obstacles, the film is an inspiring case study in leadership. Rudy’s journey is filled with valuable lessons for anyone striving to lead with purpose, determination, and heart.
As the healthcare landscape continues to evolve in complexity and urgency, so does the critical need for consistency, accountability, and evidence-based decision-making across all clinical and operational domains. At the heart of this transformation lies healthcare value analysis—a dynamic, multidisciplinary practice that bridges clinical outcomes, financial stewardship, and patient safety. And yet, despite its growing influence on care delivery, supply chain performance, and regulatory alignment, healthcare value analysis remains one of the few core specialties without universally accepted professional standards.
This past week, I was reminded of a key concept: no one is born an expert. You see, we often look at seasoned professionals and assume they’ve always had the knowledge and confidence they have today. But the truth is, every expert was once a beginner—asking questions, making mistakes, and learning along the way.
I recently attended the National Academies of Practice (NAP) annual conference where I was inducted as a professional member. It was a humbling experience, and I’m grateful to be part of the 2025 class. However, the true value of the conference wasn’t just the induction itself but the overall tone and focus of the event.

Industry News and Developments

Investor's Business Daily
Tariff uncertainty has cast a pall over medical stocks, revealing an uncomfortable truth about the supply chain for lifesaving medical devices made by trailblazing companies like Intuitive Surgical and Exact Sciences. It's particularly challenging for an industry grappling with a supply chain held together by "bubblegum and shoestring," says Dave Evans, chief executive of Fictiv, which helps companies manage manufacturing challenges, including the complicated "spiderweb" that makes up the supply chain.

Risk & Insurance
Business leaders across nearly every sector are bewitched by AI’s potential to automate repetitive tasks, improve efficiency and save money. Health care is no exception. Doctors and other providers are curious about the ways AI can be used to automate patient communication, improve response times, manage tasks like scheduling and inventory and help improve care outcomes in radiology and imaging. These tools are promising, but like any new technology they could expose health care firms to unexpected risk.

The Medicine Maker
Accurately forecasting medication use has long been a pain point within medical systems, as has finding the balance between over- and under-ordering medications (to the detriment of patients). In recent years, this tightrope has been further complicated by ongoing drug shortages and further exacerbated by supply chain disruptions caused by natural disasters. According to the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, a record-high 323 active drug shortages were reported in the first quarter of 2024.

American Hospital Association
Microsoft March 5 announced that 550 rural hospitals have joined the Cybersecurity for Rural Hospitals Program, an initiative created last year in partnership with the AHA that includes free and heavily discounted cybersecurity services. It also includes nonprofit pricing for qualifying critical access hospitals on Microsoft enterprise licenses. Visit the registration page to learn more and sign up for the program.

Fierce Healthcare
A bipartisan, bicameral group of senators has introduced legislation that would give the president new authority to negotiate and strike trade deals—which includes the handling of tariffs—with foreign countries for medical goods such as drugs and devices. The bill, also backed by industry pharmaceutical and group purchasing organizations, aims to strengthen the country’s medical supply chain, which lawmakers said became strained during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Health Care Business News
Change Healthcare showed us that our healthcare systems are reliant on an ecosystem and that we have hidden risks throughout. A single point of failure - one virtual workstation compromised for a failure to require multi-factor authentication - stymied our entire healthcare infrastructure in the most significant event of its kind, ever. There are myriad government efforts to manage the risks of this global ecosystem reliance.
