COVID-19 border closures in early 2020 choked shipments from Asia, producer of about 80% of the world's medical masks and protective gear, OSF HealthCare and some other hospital groups started investing in U.S. production of key supplies including masks, gowns and critical pharmaceuticals. The goal: Avoid a repeat of the early pandemic's life-threatening shortages of essential protective gear - an effort that has become vitally important as schools, employers, consumers and the federal government are snapping up high-quality N95s and other masks to shield against the highly contagious Omicron variant.

The healthcare industry is known for being careful and cautious, so one could be forgiven for assuming that healthcare and cryptocurrency have little in common. While the healthcare industry demands safety and risk-mitigation, cryptocurrency is built on a high-risk, high-reward model in which a tiny investment can turn into a fortune and back again at the speed of an eccentric billionaire’s tweet. Yet the backbone of cryptocurrency — blockchain technology — could soon be a very important part of the healthcare industry.
Value-based care doesn’t stop at discharge
Molnlycke Health Care®
As the healthcare industry embraces a value-based care model, it’s time for Integrated Delivery Networks (IDNs) to reimagine patient transitions throughout the continuum of care. Lack of
standardization between acute and post-acute care creates opportunity for failure points and worsened patient outcomes. By promoting communication, coordination, and consistency of care in each step of the patient journey, IDNs can maximize total value and achieve improved outcomes across the board.

Nearly all of the money in a key federal program to boost coronavirus testing, therapeutics and vaccines appears to have been committed or already shelled out, raising the potential that the Biden administration may have to ask Congress to approve additional aid. The dwindling funds reflect an uptick in spending as the White House in recent months has labored aggressively to battle back the rise of the omicron variant.

The Health and Human Services Department has failed to fix long-standing problems in its pandemic response, putting its ability to respond to future emergencies in jeopardy, the Government Accountability Office said in a report Thursday. The watchdog agency included HHS on its “High Risk List” of federal departments and programs susceptible to mismanagement and abuse without significant changes, such as drug and medical product oversight. Three dozen agencies and federal programs are currently on the list.

Sens. Patty Murray and Richard Burr on Tuesday proposed a bipartisan bill that would bolster the US' pandemic preparedness and probe the origins of COVID-19. The PREVENT Pandemics Act would "examine what has worked, and what has not, during the nation's response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and incorporates ideas from multiple members on both sides of the aisle," according to a news release from the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pension Committee.

Newsweek
Anew World Health Organization (WHO) report shared on Tuesday warned that the COVID-19 pandemic has contributed to tens of thousands of tons of medical waste, adding considerable strain on health care systems and the environment. The 71-page document by the U.N. health agency stated that 87,000 tons of personal protective equipment (PPE) were ordered through a U.N. portal between March 2020 and November 2021 and ended up as medical waste.

Cornell Chronicle
Under the intensity of a prolonged pandemic, the world finds an ever-growing and seemingly never-ending waste stream of used surgical masks, plastic face shields, and medical gloves and gowns. Cornell engineers now offer a solution to sustainably reroute the discarded material. A medium-temperature reaction called pyrolysis can reduce the plasticized medical-protection garb back into an original form – such as chemicals and petroleum – and then recycle it, perhaps into fuels, according to a new study.

Johnson & Johnson temporarily halted production of its COVID-19 vaccine in The Netherlands, the only manufacturing hub making usable doses for the pharmaceutical company, according to a New York Times report on Tuesday. The company stopped production of the vaccine at its facility in the Dutch city of Leiden at the end of 2021 and has instead turned its attention to making another vaccine for an unrelated virus, The Times reported.
