An organization that can change and adapt to its environment is one that will be able to survive in the long term. The modern business landscape is constantly evolving, and organizations that cannot keep up with these changes are likely to fall behind their competitors and ultimately fail.

The healthcare market is rapidly evolving, and nonprofits have an increasingly vital role to play in addressing the complex challenges that arise. As a nonprofit association, leading from the front is critical to making a lasting impact and driving meaningful change. AHVAP is poised to continue on a path of tremendous growth. Over the past 90 days, AHVAP has gained almost 100 new members and doubled its certification program numbers. The healthcare market today continues to experience challenges, and as a professional association, AHVAP must be ready to respond to the changing needs of our members and the specialty of healthcare value analysis.

As I sit and reflect on the last 30 days in our AHVAP journey, I am reminded of all the amazing happenings that support you, our AHVAP Members. I also just recently finished watching one of my very favorite TV shows, New Amsterdam. In that final episode, Max Goodwin reflected on how his personal motto became “How can I help?”

January has been an inspiring and productive month for AHVAP, and it has also been one filled with uncertainty. If you have followed along our journey, it is no secret that we have undergone a significant transformation. With such reformation, there are inevitably a few accompanying feelings: hesitation and apprehension.

Karen Niven, MS, BSN, RN, CVAHP Senior Director, Clinical Value Analysis Association of Healthcare Value Analysis Professionals (AHVAP) 2023 President Elect
What got you interested in value analysis?
It has always been especially important to me to be involved in the professional organizations guiding my practice. During my clinical nursing career, I was active in both ASPAN (the membership organization for Perianesthesia Nursing) and ABPANC, the Perianesthesia Certification Board on which I was President for two years. One of my personal values is professional growth and development, so when my career path led me to Premier, I fell in love with Value Analysis and since then have been active in AHVAP.
How long have you worked in healthcare and what is your professional background?
I have spent my entire career in healthcare starting as a nurse in the PACU. Even as a teenager, I was a candy-striper since I always knew that nursing and healthcare was my personal passion. For me, healthcare is a passion and drives me in my daily work. And providing healthcare that is sustainable is my absolute goal. I believe the path to sustainable healthcare is our Value Analysis process and practice. And what better way to strengthen Value Analysis than to be active in AHVAP?
What made you decide to serve on the AHVAP Board of Directors?
I am also very enthusiastic about leaving healthcare better than we found it and being personally active and involved in AHVAP is one to the best ways I can think of to have the opportunity to deliver on that goal: to leave healthcare better than we found it. While doing that by being active on our AHVAP Board of Directors, we are also able to grow in our own professional path. We are able to work for our AHVAP Members and give them the tools, education and opportunities to be part of “leaving healthcare better than we found it.” I am humbled to join each of you on that journey!

It was 20 years ago, when the SARS outbreak exposed key fragilities in the global healthcare supply chain, that people internationally began to talk seriously about pandemic preparedness. Eight years ago, when the Ebola outbreak proved the world no better prepared to address outbreaks, there was more talk and some action. This included the founding of the Pandemic Supply Chain Network (PSCN). The PSCN was established to make it easier to anticipate and respond to global healthcare supply chain disruptions.

Many people trying to fill a routine prescription or treat an ailment during this harsh cold and flu season are discovering it is not as convenient as dropping by their local pharmacy. Amoxicillin, Tamiflu, and Adderall are just some of the drugs in short supply now, leading people to hunt them down across cities, go without them for days, or search for an alternative treatment. While these shortages may be an annoyance for some, they could be harmful for many — possibly risking the health and lives of people across the country.

A more harmonized formula and schedule for administering COVID-19 vaccines gained strong support from FDA’s expert advisory panel last week, with agreement on the need to reduce confusion over which shot to take and when in order to increase vaccination rates among both adults and children in the United States. The 21 members of FDA’s Vaccine and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee (VRBAC) voted unanimously for a more simplified approach, setting the stage for the agency to authorize a common bivalent shot for all patients that targets both the original COVID-19 strain and the Omicron subvariants.

Last year was the worst financial year for US hospitals and health systems since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, reports healthcare consulting firm Kaufman Hall. The firm’s latest “National Hospital Flash Report” recorded some financial improvement in December 2022, with a median year-to-date (YTD) operating margin index of 0.2 percent. However, that was the only month last year in which hospitals saw positive YTD margins.
