During President John F Kennedy’s address in the Assembly Hall at the Paulskirche in Frankfurt, June 25, 1963, he said “Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or the present are certain to miss the future." Over the past few newsletter articles, I have written about courage, growth mindset and vision for the future. AHVAP has experienced an exciting six months, where we have enjoyed amazing positive energy resulting in tremendous membership growth, exciting new member benefits, exceptional member educational webinars, and continued influence and impact on healthcare. Our recent webinar on Candida auris was industry leading and the latest example of the timely response to member request.

I recently attended the spring IDN Conference in Orlando, FL, and took advantage of the educational sessions offered to attendees. Reflecting on my notes, one word stood out to me: value. Although each session mentioned value in healthcare, each was referenced through a different lens. Regardless of the topic, it was clear that value has different meanings to different people at different times and can change in the context of various topics. Discovering what a person considers “of value” is critical in communication and finding common ground.

The vision of a more stable and predictable supply chain after peak product and drug shortages during the pandemic is looking more and more like a mirage. From medical devices to personal protective equipment to essential drugs, scores of items are in short supply. The list of reasons for supply chain disruption are as varied as the product shortages themselves — raw materials shortages, recent COVID-19 outbreaks in China, low margins on some drugs, leading manufacturers to stop or reduce production to focus on newer, more profitable pharmaceuticals.
|
Medical Device and Diagnostic Industry
Supply chain fragility became starkly apparent when the COVID-19 pandemic reared its ugly head and reminded a public with unlimited access to products, whether innocuous or lifesaving, that those products are delivered through complex, global supply chains which can breakdown. During that time, the world was exposed to what happens when a supply shortage can be life-threatening; as it was when personal protection equipment was low, and ventilators rationed.

Drug shortages are rampant across much of Europe and the United States, where more than 100 medications, from antibiotics to inhalers to surgical sedatives, are currently unavailable. Researchers contends that dependence on foreign drug manufacturing has created fragile supply chains that imperil patients.

Financial reserves have helped nonprofit hospitals and health systems survive amid ongoing operational and economic challenges, according to a report prepared for the American Hospital Association (AHA) by Kaufman Hall. Nonprofit hospitals generally only have two sources of funding. They can earn revenue from operations and investments or borrow funds through debt issuance in the bond markets or other forms of borrowing. With limited funding sources, nonprofit hospitals often rely on financial reserves to maintain stability.

While it is critically important for the nation’s healthcare system and for biomedical research that the Supreme Court’s recent ruling preserved access to mifepristone (Mifeprex) for now, the emergency action fails to ensure FDA’s long-standing regulatory authority and legal status for evaluating and approving new drugs and medical products. In sending the case back to the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals for further review, the high court’s April 21, 2023 action leaves open the prospect of further rulings that could undermine FDA’s approval process.

Healthcare organizations are still more reactive than proactive when it comes to cybersecurity, a new study by Censinet, KLAS Research and the American Hospital Association revealed. A total of eight leading health systems sponsored the study to assess how aligned the industry is to the standards established by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and Health Industry Cybersecurity Practices (HICP) guidance.
