Happy holidays AHVAP members! It’s hard to believe the holiday season is here again, and we are closing out this calendar year. As I take a moment and reflect on the accomplishments we tackled this year as an Association, I am grateful to have such an amazing group of Board members, industry partners, and members who helped synergize our new mission, vision, values, and purpose. Many of you experienced frustration with our services, our professional development offerings, and wanted more value out of your membership. We heard you!

In the dynamic landscape of healthcare, the shift from volume-based to value-based models has become increasingly pivotal. At the forefront of this transformation are the "Value Vanguards," individuals who champion the integration of value analysis in healthcare. Their role? To navigate the complex waters of healthcare delivery, ensuring that patient outcomes and cost efficiency are at the heart of decision-making processes.

Alan Mulally shared this great quote, “Leadership is having a compelling vision, a comprehensive plan, relentless implementation, and talented people working together.” As we think back on our AHVAP 2023 year, I reflect on our courageous year filled with belief in our Value Analysis specialty.

The holiday season is truly a magical time of the year. I believe what makes each holiday special is family, food, and traditions. It should be a time to pause and reflect, with gratitude, on all the triumphs and opportunities that shaped our lives. With this in mind, I want to reflect on the past 12 months as your AHVAP treasurer.

Becker's Hospital Review
The Biden administration announced Nov. 27 that it plans to broaden the capabilities of the HHS to allow it to make further investments in domestic production of critical medicines and medical supplies. The policy the administration is enacting falls under Title III of the Defense Production Act, which was enacted in 1950, during the Cold War, to bolster research, development, production and scaling of essential supplies.

Supply Chain Brain
Hospitals across the U.S. are facing an escalating crisis: acute shortages of vital medical supplies. From medications and personal protective equipment (PPE) to medical devices and testing kits, healthcare facilities are struggling to obtain essential products needed to properly treat patients. Recent data reveals that backorders for critical supplies have skyrocketed compared with pre-pandemic levels. Where hospitals previously saw 400-500 backordered items daily, they now face between 800 to 1,000.

Medical Device Network
Artificial intelligence (AI) has increasingly been permeating many industries in the last few years, and among them is the medical devices industry. Like in many other industries, AI is particularly useful in accelerating the process of time-intensive and resource-intensive tasks, as well as aiding in decision-making processes. The beneficial impacts of AI in medical are thus far-reaching with great potential.

MedTech Intelligence Medical waste, often hazardous and infectious, poses significant environmental and health risks. From used syringes to contaminated bandages, the sheer volume of waste generated by hospitals, clinics and other medical facilities is staggering. According to the World Health Organization, developed countries produce up to 0.5 kg of hazardous medical waste per person per day. Such statistics underscore the urgency for innovative and sustainable disposal methods.
