AHVAP Monthly eNews
Leadership
This month, I want to discuss the importance of courage, leadership, and future thinking in organizations, particularly in the context of advancing specialty healthcare value analysis through cross-functional interprofessional collaboration. Courage is essential for taking risks and making complex decisions, while leadership is crucial for guiding teams toward a common goal. Future thinking involves anticipating trends and planning for long-term success. It is important to establish clear goals, roles, and communication channels among team members from different departments. This practice should encourage open dialogue, knowledge sharing, and mutual respect to leverage the diverse expertise within the organization.
In the ever-evolving landscape of healthcare, the push for value — achieving the highest quality care at the lowest possible cost — has never been more critical. Healthcare value analysis stands at the forefront of this movement, a discipline that systematically evaluates healthcare services and products to determine their efficacy and worth in terms of patient outcomes and cost-efficiency. However, the true potential of healthcare value analysis can only be unlocked through robust collaboration across various sectors within the healthcare system.
I am writing this mid-April following Mother Nature’s late April Fool’s joke. In New Hampshire, we just had a classic, late-season Nor’easter, resulting in significant heavy snow and massive power outages. In my home, we were technically ‘off-grid’ for about 48 hours but were not without power. Our large generator powers our heat, water, refrigerators/freezers, and even the internet. My cooktop is gas, and I have been known to make stovetop pizza in my cast iron pan during past power outages; we lose power a lot. We even have a smaller generator in case the larger one fails. As my husband says, “Two is one, and one is none.”
Happy Spring, AHVAP members. As we put away our heavy coats and watch for the sprouting of spring flowers, it is a reminder of renewal. AHVAP is embarking on an exciting time with increased membership this month and for the year. We continue to grow the education opportunities with the most recent launch of the inaugural cohort of the AHVAP Executive Leaders Fellowship program, a testament to our commitment to professional growth and development. The micro-certifications have been well attended and offer essential, relevant subjects for value analysis professionals. Our strengthening partnership with the healthcare industry partners allows us to collaborate on new levels.

While drug shortages worsened due to supply chain issues at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, they quickly returned to pre-pandemic levels, according to research published on 5 April in JAMA. The study also found that one in seven supply chain issue reports, or 14%, were associated with drug shortages. The objective of the paper was to estimate the proportion of supply chain issue reports associated with drug shortages during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Health IT Analytics
As healthcare organizations pursue improved care delivery and increased operational efficiency, digital transformation remains a key strategy to help achieve these goals. Many health systems’ digital transformation journey involves identifying the value of their data and capitalizing on that value through big data analytics. Of the four types of healthcare data analytics, predictive analytics currently has some of the highest potential for value generation.

US healthcare leaders are actively pursuing innovative business models, including both vertical integration and pure-play specialization. However, the growth rates of these business models have diverged in the past few years. While no organization focuses on just one of them, business models that emphasize vertical integration have produced the strongest growth, our research finds.

Survey results from the AMA demonstrate that the economic harm to practices and patient-care impact of the Change Healthcare cyber-attack sare ongoing. The AMA’s informal survey findings (PDF), released April 10, show the continuing, devastating impact of the Change Healthcare cyberattack, which threatens the viability of physician practices across the country, and, according to respondents, has serious implications for patient care.

A poultry facility in Michigan and egg producer in Texas both reported outbreaks of avian flu this week. The latest developments on the virus also include infected dairy cows and the first known instance of a human catching bird flu from a mammal. Although health officials say the risk to the public remains low, there is rising concern, emerging in part from news that the largest producer of fresh eggs in the U.S. reported an outbreak.

National health spending totaled $4.5 trillion in 2022—17% of gross domestic product (GDP)—and is projected to grow faster than GDP through 2031, contributing to higher costs for families, employers, states, and the federal government. As policymakers consider a variety of strategies to make health care more affordable, they have been increasingly attentive to consolidation in health care markets—including mergers and acquisitions of health care providers—and the potential effects of consolidation on the cost and quality of care and other outcomes.
