Leadership
As we look forward to 2025, AHVAP plays a pivotal role in advancing the field of healthcare value analysis by providing education, resources, and networking opportunities for professionals dedicated to optimizing the value of healthcare products and services.
A new year presents a remarkable opportunity for reflection and renewal. It’s a time when many of us set fresh goals, reevaluate our habits, and imagine where we’d like to see ourselves in the months ahead. In all of this planning and dreaming, one element stands out as crucial to real progress: the willingness to take full accountability and ownership of our lives. When we do, we empower ourselves to steer our own destiny instead of allowing our circumstances — or someone else — to determine the course.
As part of the inaugural AHAVP Executive Leaders Fellowship Program, one of our key responsibilities was to present a poster at the Annual Conference. One of our incredible colleagues, Sarah Hobbs MSN, RN, CCRN, CVAHP, not only delivered a professional and heartfelt poster, but also thoughtfully set up a table filled with inspirational cards. I still carry one of those cards in my planner — it reads, 'Don’t look back, you’re not going that way.' This is exactly how I feel as we welcome 2025.
As 2024 draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the remarkable progress and success that AHVAP has achieved over the past year. Much of this success can be attributed to the exceptional leadership of Karen Niven and Hudson Garrett. Their dedication and tireless efforts have been instrumental in driving the organization's growth, expanding membership, strengthening key industry relationships, and establishing AHVAP as a leading force within the value analysis community.

AHVAP Spotlight
I am pleased to announce the results of our 2025 Board of Directors Elections. Sandy Wise has been re-elected to the position of Secretary. Boyd (BJ) McCluskey and Jodi Katz have been elected to the positions of Director-at-Large. I would like to especially thank outgoing 2024 Board of Directors member, Erin Arnold, for her years of service to the board. The new board members will begin their terms on January 1, 2025. This year’s election was a pivotal year with record-breaking ballots submitted and multiple immensely qualified candidates volunteering to run for the open Board of Directors positions. AHVAP HQ also launched a new, secure ballot system that made the voting process as simple as possible for our members.

Medical supply shortages remain a critical issue across the United States, especially in light of recent public health crises. Former President Donald Trump’s plans to address these shortages in 2025 have sparked discussions nationwide. His proposals aim to increase domestic production, improve supply chain efficiency, and reduce reliance on foreign manufacturers. However, critics question whether the plans will achieve lasting results or create new challenges for the healthcare system.

Science News
The world faced many public health challenges this year, including dangerous heat waves and outbreaks of the infectious diseases dengue and mpox. In the United States, after years of increases, there are early but promising signs of a downward trend in drug overdose deaths.

U.S. Food and Drug Administration
We know it can be frustrating when you can’t get a medicine you need. That’s why FDA works closely with the pharmaceutical industry and other stakeholders to prevent drug shortages and to lessen the impact on patients any time there is a delay in the availability of the medicines you need. Ensuring access to safe, effective, high-quality medicines is one of our top priorities.

Medical Device and Diagnostic Industry
Many medical devices in the United States will incur a price hike if President-elect Donald Trump’s promised tariffs on imported goods go into effect, according to a Nov. 26 press release from GlobalData Plc. The data analytics and consulting firm based in London, England, predicts that roughly 75% of medical devices marketed in the US will see a price increase. About 69% of US marketed medical devices are manufactured exclusively outside of the country, all of which are targeted by the new tariffs.
