Leadership
How do you become a catalyst for healthcare value analysis? By championing value analysis, leaders can drive lasting change within their organizations, foster a culture of continuous improvement, and set the stage for ongoing innovation. AHVAP is your “north star” for the source of truth to become a value analysis champion and foster a value analysis revolution.
As the Executive Director of the Association of Healthcare Value Analysis Professionals, I am continually inspired by the remarkable dedication and expertise that each of you brings to our field. In today’s rapidly evolving healthcare environment, one principle stands out as more critical than ever: collaboration. Equally important is our commitment to maintaining a strong physical presence within healthcare facilities. These elements are not just buzzwords — they are the pillars that support our mission of delivering high-value care and fostering lasting, productive relationships with all stakeholders.
For a while now, I have heard a certain AHVAP President (I am looking at you, Karen Niven) talk about Ted Lasso. I am typically behind on the latest shows, so I had no idea what she was talking about when she would quote from the show. I had not seen one episode. That is, until last week. It was the season opener when Ted walked into the locker room for the first time. He was new to football (soccer), and as he walked through the locker room door excitedly, he said, "It smells like opportunity." It was then that I got it. You see, I spoke about a waiting room being a classroom at last year's conference. At the same conference, Dr. Carrico spoke about creating a library. The locker room, the waiting room, and the library are all different versions of the same concept. It's about being ready to recognize and seize the moment when it arrives. It is about creating spaces and a plan to prepare for future opportunities. Success rarely happens by accident; it's the result of deliberate preparation.
Whenever I interview a prospective employee, I ask, “Where do you see yourself in five years?” This reflection prompts me to consider healthcare value analysis and its trajectory over the next five years.

President Trump moved quickly on Monday to withdraw the United States from the World Health Organization, a move that public health experts say will undermine the nation’s standing as a global health leader and make it harder to fight the next pandemic. In an executive order issued about eight hours after he took the oath of office, Mr. Trump cited a string of reasons for the withdrawal, including the W.H.O.’s “mishandling of the COVID-19 pandemic,” and the “failure to adopt urgently needed reforms.” He said the agency demands “unfairly onerous payments” from the United States, and complained that China pays less.

Healthcare Dive
Healthcare providers are set to have another year where maximizing efficiency, above all, is paramount. Although both for-profit and nonprofit providers reported improved operating margins last year compared to 2023, experts say systems will be prone to backsliding this year if they do not carefully contain costs and explore strategic growth opportunities. Health systems will seek to expand gains from 2024, including improved utilization metrics, and apply lessons learned from major supply chain crises.

Medical Device Network
Michelle Tarver, director of the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH), said that the US may be at risk of falling behind in its ability to protect patients by assuring device availability. This month, new European Union (EU) regulations came into effect, requiring medical device manufacturers to flag any anticipated supply shortages to authorities at least six months in advance.

Fierce Healthcare
Hospitals and health systems, by and large, are going into 2025 on better footing than they were a year ago, as financial and operating performances stabilized. Key indicators like operating margins, outpatient revenue and average length of stay improved from 2023 and have held steady in the back half of the year, according to advisory firm Kaufman Hall. For many providers, volumes have rebounded to above pre-pandemic levels.

Stat News
For supply chains, natural and manmade disruptive events act like a domino effect, impacting an organization’s operations, bottom line, and the delivery of products and services our economy depends on. Remember toilet paper in March 2020? For the health care sector, the consequences of this disruption are far more dire than having to check a few stores for toilet paper. Tariffs, supply shortages, global logistics delays, natural disasters, and political unrest can have an overwhelming impact on patient care and the availability of medical products that providers rely on every day.

Syphilis rates have been rising in the United States for 10 years. If untreated, the disease poses grim risks, from heart and brain damage to blindness to miscarriage and infant death. Yet when the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a shortage of benzathine penicillin G—the only approved treatment for pregnant women—in 2023, the agency waited nine months before importing a version of the drug from a French pharmaceutical company approved for use in Europe.
