Leadership
Healthcare organizations worldwide are under increasing pressure to provide high-quality patient care while managing rising costs and resource constraints. Value analysis in healthcare has emerged as a revolutionary approach to optimizing patient outcomes, improving efficiency, and reducing unnecessary spending. By systematically evaluating products, services, and processes, healthcare institutions can ensure they deliver the best care while maintaining financial sustainability. AHVAP is your “true north” for help and support in this area while supporting our AHVAP members. Value analysis in healthcare is a structured, data-driven approach that assesses the cost-effectiveness, quality, and clinical impact of medical products, services, and technologies. It involves a multidisciplinary team — clinicians, supply chain professionals, financial analysts, and administrators — who evaluate whether a particular resource provides actual value regarding patient outcomes, safety, and cost-effectiveness.
In healthcare, the word “value” is frequently invoked — value-based purchasing, value-driven care, and value-focused analytics all point to the industry’s growing attention to outcomes that balance cost, quality, and patient safety. Yet, the field of healthcare value analysis itself often lacks universally recognized guidelines for defining what constitutes a “best practice.” The result can be fragmented processes, inconsistent evaluations, and missed opportunities to improve the broader healthcare ecosystem.
One of my duties as the President-Elect is to chair the Annual Conference committee and, just this past week, we just wrapped up our first official meeting for the 2025 Annual Conference season. It is always such an exciting time, and I couldn’t be more ecstatic for this year’s event. One of the committee’s first tasks is to review the submitted topics blindly and, from what we reviewed, 2025 is shaping up to be our best year yet. The committee is very intentional about curating each session. Every topic and discussion are influenced by the feedback we receive from the prior year’s attendees. We’re not just filling a schedule — we’re crafting an experience that delivers real value and actionable insights for our membership.

Healthcare Dive
Health supply chain costs and pharmaceutical expenses are projected to rise modestly between July 2025 and June 2026, according to new research from healthcare services company Vizient. Providers are growing increasingly concerned about rising pharmaceutical and supply chain costs in 2025, experts told Healthcare Dive last month. The Vizient report adds fuel to those fears, showing slight upticks in spending to come this summer.

The Trump administration's proposed tariffs on imported goods from Canada and Mexico may currently be on pause, but uncertainty over their potential reinstatement is having a ripple effect across the healthcare and pharmaceutical industries. Hospitals and drugmakers are urging the president to exempt pharmaceuticals and medical goods from the new tariffs on Chinese imports. In a letter to President Trump on Tuesday, the American Hospital Association said, "The U.S. imports many cancer and cardiovascular medications, immunosuppressives, antibiotics and combination antibiotics from China."

Fierce Pharma
With President Donald Trump’s tariffs about to take hold, industry groups are warning that the move could hamstring U.S. pharmaceutical supplies and productivity, and put an extra strain on patients’ wallets, too. Over the weekend, the Trump Administration imposed 25% tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico, plus a 10% tariff on Chinese imports. The tariffs are slated to go into effect at 12:01 a.m. Eastern time on Tuesday, The New York Times reports.

Healthcare IT News
With the increasing digital transformation of healthcare and improvements in the quality of data, IT systems in healthcare are becoming an increasingly attractive target for malicious actors. A cyberattack can cripple an institution, cause disruptions in service delivery and result in patient harm. Major threats for healthcare organisations include ransomware, breaches caused by cloud vulnerabilities and misconfigurations, bad bot traffic and phishing.

CNN
The U.S. is in the throes of an unusually intense and severe flu season, with hospitalization rates topping the levels seen with COVID-19 at some points of the pandemic. On top of the flu infection itself, doctors say they’re seeing large numbers of patients with some of its most devastating complications. In children, specialists say they’re seeing more than usual come to the hospital with neurologic complications, including devastating brain swelling that leads to tissue death — a condition called acute necrotizing encephalopathy, or ANE.

The man Dr. Gray Ballinger treated Wednesday for high blood pressure delayed care out of fear of immigration enforcement, the Queens primary care physician said. The man, whose wife has stage 4 cancer, isn't alone in his anxiety, Ballinger said. “People’s blood pressure is much higher than usual on a regular basis,” Ballinger, who uses they/them pronouns, told USA TODAY. “The sense of fear in Queens among immigrants is heartbreaking.”
