In Memoriam — Scott Henley

Earlier this week, Utility Safety Partners learned that Scott Henley, Alberta One-Call Corporation’s first general manager, quietly passed away at his Vancouver Island home.

Scott was initially contracted for only seven months, to update feasibility and perform vendor evaluations on behalf of Alberta One-Call Corporation's first board of directors in 1983. After choosing the preferred vendor, the directors asked Scott to remain on board to secure office space, hire staff and implement the province-wide computerized communications system.

After leaving Alberta One-Call in 1989, Scott created Henley Consulting and was instrumental in building One Call/Call Before You Dig services in British Columbia and Ontario. Scott was a constant driving force contributing to the improvement of the damage prevention process through his involvement with the Canadian Standards Association, One Call Systems International and both the CGA (Common Ground Alliance) and CCGA (Canadian Common Ground Alliance). He was also instrumental launching the British Columbia Common Ground Alliance and was the regional partner’s first executive director.

“It was a time of major expansion within Canada’s damage prevention space,” says USP President Mike Sullivan. “Scott was the most significant pioneer — and he remained a constant and influential presence at damage prevention events and initiatives for decades following, keeping us all on the straight and narrow.”

In his later years, Scott kept in touch with everyone to whom the torch had been passed; cheering us on from the sidelines and marveling at the progress, improvements, and direction in which the industry was moving.

USP raises a "glass of chardonnay" in remembrance and appreciation of Scott's many contributions to damage prevention. Rest in Peace, Scott, and thank you. You will be missed.
