April is Dig Safe Month!

The snow is melting, birds are chirping, and the rabbits are once again brown. All signs point to spring with another cold winter behind us – just in time for April Dig Safe Month. 

April Dig Safe Month is an opportunity to spread awareness about Click Before You Dig and safe digging practices as construction and renovation projects kick off for the year. We encourage all our partners to join the campaign to keep Albertans safe. Support Dig Safe Month by ordering promotional items from our online store and distributing them within your community. Like and share safety reminders posted on X, Instagram, and Facebook. Share videos, graphics, and informational resources with your colleagues and customers. Check out our podcast.

Dig Safe Month marks the beginning of USP’s Safety Ambassador season. In 2025, we welcome a new Ambassador to our team in the Lethbridge / Southern Alberta region. If you would like to learn more about damage prevention and safety best practices, have questions about utility safety, or are hosting a community event, invite your local Safety Ambassador by emailing info@utilitysafety.ca.

Throughout Dig Safe Month, you will find USP sharing information and resources at various events throughout the province. Some of the events we look forward to this year include:

• April 3: Red Deer Common Ground Alliance’s 2025 Safety Breakfast. Enjoy breakfast, network with others in the ground disturbance industry, find out about planned changes in 2025, and learn safety information for when you’re working near utilities. Register today!
• April 9: Life In The Heartland’s Spring Info Eve event in Fort Saskatchewan. This open house provides local residents the opportunity to visit with industry companies and hear live updates about what's happening in the region. Learn more.
• April 10: Apex Utilities celebrates Dig Safe Month by hosting a barbeque for contractors and excavators in Drumheller. Learn about new safety programs and updates.
• April 11-13: You can find USP at multiple events this weekend. Stop by and say hello at the Spring Home & Garden Show in Grande Prairie, or at the Great Canadian Trade Fair & Sale in Sherwood Park where we have partnered with EAPUOC.
• April 14-15: The 2025 Utility Safety Conference! Join us in Breaking the Ice, Building a Stronger Community at the JW Marriott in Edmonton. Learn about recent industry advancements during concurrent educational sessions, participate in USP’s working committee meetings to discover current initiatives and projects, explore the latest products and services during the tradeshow, and more!
• April 23: USP partners with SCGA to host a Dig Safe Breakfast in Lloydminster. This breakfast is one of 23 free safety breakfasts in Saskatchewan in April. Whether you’re a professional excavator or tackling a digging project at home or on the farm, these breakfasts are for you. Register here.
• April 25-26: The Northern Connections Expo, previously called the Spring Trade Show, in Peace River. We have partnered with ATCO to bring you safety resources and answer all your questions about working safety around utilities.
