Sherwood Park, Alberta’s Great BIG ClickBeforeYouDig

By Mike Sullivan, President, Utility Safety Partners

Ten years ago, Enbridge teamed up with Alberta One-Call Corporation to unveil the biggest ClickBeforeYouDig brand in the world on one of Enbridge’s tanks at the Sherwood Park terminal.

While artwork adorning tanks at terminals isn’t anything new, this is the only tank on the planet promoting ClickBeforeYouDig.com — the one-window portal to request a locate anywhere in Canada or the United States. Working with former Enbridge employee, Warren Loper, who always had a knack for promotions, an idea became a plan and the plan became reality.

Since that day, a lot has happened. We’ve endured leadership and party changes at the provincial and federal level in Canada, and two presidential elections in the United States have taken place resulting in new leadership both times. Queen Elizabeth II became the longest reigning British Monarch and the Ice-Bucket Challenge raised more than $150 Million. And as far as Alberta One-Call operations go, ClickBeforeYouDig is here to stay with over 85% of all locate requests originating on the web! A big shift from the 30% back in 2013.

“The location of the giant ClickBeforeYouDig brand is fabulous,” says Mark Bradley, a former Enbridge employee and now damage prevention manager with Pembina Pipeline. “It faces the busy intersection of Anthony Henday and Baseline Road on the west end of Sherwood Park. Hundreds of thousands of people have seen that sign and hundreds of thousands more will see it in the future.”

But what about the "Alberta One-Call" brand above the popular "Click" call to action? It’s a question I’ve heard a few times since rebranding to Utility Safety Partners. Someday, it might be replaced with the Utility Safety Partners "LIFE" brand we are very proud of but there’s no rush. The most important message — ClickBeforeYouDig — remains prominently and proudly displayed and we couldn’t be happier every time we see it!
