Last weekend, and traveling from the south of Calgary, my wife and I took a drive through Highwood Pass. It was a picture-perfect day and the seasonal colours are starting to emerge.
Growing up near the Eastern Townships of Quebec, where the Appalachian Mountains begin (or end?), we took the forest’s vibrant fall colours for granted and simply assumed the oranges and reds were seen everywhere. But, as summer fades, Alberta's Rocky Mountains also transform into a breathtaking tapestry of vibrant colours, marking the arrival of fall. The fall season, typically spanning from late September to November, offers a unique blend of natural beauty, outdoor activities, and serene landscapes that attract visitors from near and far.
One of the most striking aspects of fall in the Rockies is the dramatic change in foliage. Aspens, birches, and maples burst into shades of gold, orange, and yes, maybe a little red, too, creating a stunning contrast against the deep greens of evergreens and the rugged gray of mountain peaks. Popular spots like Banff National Park and Jasper National Park become particularly picturesque during this time, with trails lined by vibrant trees and scenic viewpoints offering breathtaking panoramas.
The fall season is an ideal time for outdoor enthusiasts to explore the Rockies. Hiking trails, such as the famous Plain of Six Glaciers or Johnston Canyon, provide opportunities to witness the stunning fall foliage up close. As temperatures begin to drop, cozying up by a fire at one of the region's lodges or cabins becomes a cherished experience. Local festivals celebrating harvest and culture also emerge, offering visitors a taste of Alberta's rich heritage.
