Earlier this month, PHTA Director of Government Relations Jason Davidson was in Boston, MA, lobbying for House Bill 424 which establishes a statewide licensure program for pool and spa builders, service and repair, and maintenance professionals. The legislation passed the House Consumer Protection Committee last year, and currently sits in the House Ways and Means House Committee for further consideration.

PHTA GR was able to maximize its time in Boston by meeting with eight members of the House Ways and Means Committee, including Committee leadership (in-person and virtual) as well as the Chief of Staff for the House Speaker. PHTA GR was invited to and attended two different political fundraisers for State house members running for re-election.

During the visit to the Massachusetts capital, Jason also conducted a TV interview with NBC 10 Boston News to promote House Bill 424 and talk about unregulated pool contractors performing unsatisfactory work and taking advantage of homeowners.

Most builders construct safe pools and spas using quality materials and craftmanship. Unfortunately, there have been several instances of shoddy construction, leaving consumers frustrated and damaging industry reputation.

Statewide licensure ensure builders, service and repair, and maintenance professionals are trained on state codes and guidelines. Additionally, Massachusetts homeowners and consumers will have the peace of mind that they have hired a licensed professional to build, repair, and service their pool and spa. Finally, a statewide licensure program helps reduce “bad actors” within the industry.
