This session will focus on the development and implementation of an art therapy program designed to support the mental health and wellness of African American/Black women. The event will be held live via Zoom on Tuesday, March 5, 7 – 9 p.m. ET, and will be recorded and available to view on-demand for all registrants for 30 days after the event is held. Registration fees are $52 for AATA members and $82 for non-members. The session is FREE for AATA student members! Attendees may receive 2 CE credits.
By AATA President Nadia Paredes, MA, LMFT, ATR I had the privilege of representing the National Coalition of Creative Arts Therapies Associations (NCCATA) and AATA at both the White House and NEA Summit on Arts and Culture and the Arts and Health Pre-Summit Caucus. These first ever convenings brought together policymakers, arts advocates, and artists to collaborate on how art can contribute to the health and well-being of individuals and communities. Many White House representatives, Congressional lawmakers, as well as Surgeon General Vivek Murthy attended.
Each February, AATA celebrates Black History Month and recognizes Black art therapists who served as pioneers for the profession and our association. This month we honor the work of Cliff Joseph, Lucille Venture, Sarah McGee, Charles Anderson, and Georgette Seabrooke Powell. (Click here to view their profiles). To learn more about the work of these art therapists and many others, please visit Black History in Art Therapy: A Living Reference & Resource Guide, compiled by Deanna Barton, MA, ATR-BC & Zachary D. Van Den Berg, MA, LPC, ATR-P.

I dedicated my thesis work toward learning more about their relationship with the mental health community and how to remove their help-seeking barriers in order to introduce them to art therapy." ⇒ Join Starr in our upcoming virtual Continuing Education session, Exploring Art Therapy Groups Among African American Black Women from Research to Program Implementation, March 5.
