AATA News
As we kick off Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, join us for a session that delves into the rich and varied experiences of immigrants on Tuesday, April 30, 7 – 9 p.m. ET. In this session, Tsz Yan Winnie Wong, MAATC, ATR-BC, LPC, will share how personal objects, such as a pen, crystal bracelet, or storage hard drive, carried by these individuals on their journeys, serve as focal points to unravel their complex emigration stories in their unique sociocultural contexts. Attendees may receive 2 CE credits. The session is FREE for AATA student members!
AATA honors excellence in the art therapy profession through our annual awards and scholarships. Every year, we recognize AATA members making strides in research, education, and their own practices. The 2024 Call for Applications is now open! We hope you will take a moment to honor a colleague by nominating them, or consider applying yourself to support your own career. There are opportunities for recognition in Research, Multicultural, Governmental Affairs, and more.
Join us virtually for AATA’s Continuing Education series on ethics in art therapy. The series is available as a discounted bundle or as individual sessions — and as always, AATA members receive an additional discount! The first session of the 3-part Ethics CE series, Doing the Right Thing: Ethics, the Law, Technology, and More, will be presented by former AATA President and Honorary Lifetime Member Mercedes Ballbé ter Maat, Ph.D., LPC, ATR-BC, HLM, (pictured on the right) on May 7. The second session will be presented on May 14: Same, Same But Different—Exploring and Comparing Art Therapy History, Education, and Practice in the US and India. Aishwerya K. Iyer ATR, MA, will share her experiences both as an art therapist in the U.S. and as an educator in India’s first Master’s art therapy program at MIT-ADT University in Pune. The third session, Beyond the Breach: Strategies for Responding to Confidentiality Crises, will be hosted by Traci Bitondo, PhD, LPC, LPAT, ATR-BC, ACS, ATCS on May 28.
As you may know, the Occupational Information Network (O*NET) is a free online database created by the Dept. of Labor (DOL) that categorizes and defines hundreds of jobs. The ways in which professions are classified and defined within the database directly impact insurance reimbursement for various professions, including art therapy. DOL is updating the O*NET database and has asked for AATA’s help. They need a list of art therapy professionals who have five or more years of experience and hold an ATR-BC to complete the O*NET survey. In order for AATA to provide this list, we are asking art therapists to update their MyAATA profiles with the most up-to-date information about their credentials and years of experience. Our goal in participating in this O*NET process is to correctly classify art therapy so it is more alligned with similar professions.
Lisa Wasserman, PsyD, ATR-BC, ATCS, and Lourdes Figueroa, MPS, ATR, provide art therapy services at the Memorial Regional Hospital (MRH) Department of Behavioral Health and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital of South Florida (JoeD), both in Hollywood, Florida. On any given day, you will see these two interacting with the patients, staff, and families—and providing a service like no other. Creative Arts Therapies Week provided Dr. Wasserman and Ms. Figueroa an opportunity to celebrate the profession, recognize the excellent therapeutic sessions available within their hospitals, and educate patients and staff about art therapy. Here’s how they celebrated!

The Accreditation Council for Art Therapy Education (ACATE) is currently seeking applications and nominations for two Educator and one Practitioner positions that will become open on July 1, 2024. “By anchoring my clinical practice in the relational-cultural framework, I emphasize the crucial role of connections and relationships within the sociocultural contexts of individual’s lived experiences. My involvement in trauma research and practice, particularly with communities of emigrated Hong Kongers and survivors of sexual violence in Chicago, has enriched my understanding of “healing” as a process of reintegration and reconnection.” Join Winnie for a virtual CE event on April 30.
