The 2024 Olympics has moved the conversation about mental health. It also “marks a sea-change in the prioritization of, and dedication to, supporting athletes’ mental health.”

In response to U.S. gymnast Simone Biles’s calls for the need to prioritize the mental health of athletes after the Tokyo Olympics, the International Olympic Committee in 2023 issued an action plan that highlighted how elite athletes are “at increased risk of mental health problems, such as depression, anxiety and eating disorders.” The US Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC) is also expanding its mental health program. Last year alone, around 1,200 USOPC athletes received mental health services.

Let's continue the conversation about mental health and help reduce stigma to care even after the games are over.

At AATA, we are so proud of our members, and especially during the Olympics, we want to celebrate our international members! Did you know that AATA members come from more than 43 countries? The work you do every day to advance the art therapy profession across the globe is extraordinary.
