Can’t make it to the in-person conference in Pittsburgh? Or want to supplement your Pittsburgh experience? Join us for the Annual Virtual Conference, Oct. 26 - 27! This conference will be unlike any other virtual experience—with opportunities to engage and connect with art therapists and students from around the world. (Or if you just want to listen in or watch later on-demand, you’re welcome to do that too!) We are excited to announce the plenary session, Arts & Health Continuum: A New Perspective, featuring AATA President Nadia Paredes; Dr. Nisha Sajnani, Jameel Arts & Health Lab; AATA Treasurer and NYU Professor Dr. Marygrace Berberian; and Artist Yazmany Arboleda. The panelists will explore how the arts are emerging as the next frontier in health and well-being, as federal and local governments, healthcare systems, and cultural institutions increase their arts-based programming. See the full agenda and register today! AATA2024 Pittsburgh attendees get a 50% discount toward registration.
Each September 15 to October 15, our nation recognizes National Hispanic American Heritage Month to pay tribute to the generations of Hispanic Americans who have positively influenced and enriched our nation and society.
This Hispanic Heritage Month, we are sharing the art and experiences of six inspiring Latina/o/xs art therapists by profiling the work they do in support of their clients and communities they serve. Please take a moment to check out their Feature Member profiles and share on social media.
In case you missed last month’s virtual Continuing Education session hosted by Gabriela Osorio Fajardo, MTFS, MTA, in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, you can watch the recording now. During the session, which is now on the AATA Online Learning Academy, Gabriela helped us explore huipil-making, and how to integrate textiles and photoembroidery in clinical practice.
Member Corner
The Call for Nominations is officially open for five positions on AATA’s Board of Directors and on Nominations Committee Member! Would you (or someone you know) bring valuable experience, unique perspective, and creative thinking to the AATA Board of Directors? The Nominations Committee is looking for broad representation of AATA’s membership and the art therapy community to help propel the association and profession forward. As art therapy gains recognition, our member-leaders are vital in charting a course toward a more sustainable, inclusive, and welcoming organization and community. The Multicultural Quilt is an annual project undertaken by the Multicultural Committee— and a core part of the Annual Conference experience. Each year in the Open Art Studio, participants select muslin pieces and use their artistic expression to design quilt pieces that “embrace diversity piece-by-piece.” After each piece is collected, it is later stitched together to make the final quilt that showcases the diversity and collaborative nature of our organization. This final product is then raffled off at the following year’s conference. If you’re attending AATA2024 in Pittsburgh, please join the Multicultural Committee on Oct. 7, 4 – 5 p.m., in the Open Art Studio, to create a new quilt.
October 2, 2024 | By Jen McSparron MA, LPC, ATR-BC On Sept. 3, a dedicated group of Texas art therapists traveled to Austin to advocate for independent art therapy licensure in Texas. Armed with goodie bags filled with information about art therapy and existing programs across the state, the team visited various legislative offices, sharing their personal stories and highlighting the critical need for licensed art therapists. Their mission: to raise awareness about the value of art therapy and the importance of supporting licensure for art therapists in Texas.
