AATA News
This holiday season, many of us are looking forward to a well-deserved break. Why not gift yourself some learning? This year, we offered 11 CE sessions through our popular Monthly Learning Series, and we’re excited to help you wrap up the year by revisiting our most-loved sessions—at a discount! Now through December 31, get 20% off any session in our Annual Art Therapy Ethics and Supervision Series. Choose from any (or all!) of these 11 sessions, and decide whether to enjoy them right away (with a batch of President Nadia Paredes’s famous brownies!) or save them to watch at your convenience in 2025. Use the discount code SUPERETHICS11 at checkout to take advantage of this special member-appreciation offer, exclusively for AATA members.
The public comment period for Virginia's Proposed Art Therapy Regulations opened on December 16 and will remain open until February 14. During this time, members of the public have the opportunity to provide feedback and support for the regulations, as well as attend a public hearing scheduled for January 24 at the Department of Health Professions in Henrico. Members of the Virginia Art Therapy Association are encouraging art therapists and members of the public to write comments that support the regulation, share perspectives from art therapists or art therapy students in the state, or make sensible suggestions for change (if any).
On December 20, AATA sent a letter urging Governor Kathy Hochul to sign A9018/S8715 into law, allowing Licensed Creative Arts Therapists (LCATs) to bill Medicaid directly for their services. With over 2,000 LCATs serving in diverse settings across the state, this legislation aims to improve the accessibility of mental health care services. Passing this bill won't increase state costs but would significantly enhance access to psychotherapy services for vulnerable populations.
By Eliza Homer, PhD, ATR-BC, LCPC, NCC, Executive Director, Accreditation Council for Art Therapy Education At its November meeting, the Board of Directors of the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) approved the revisions to the CAAHEP Standards and Guidelines for the Accreditation of Educational Programs in Art Therapy. Prior to the Open Hearing held on September 24, ACATE reviewed the 57 comments that were received during the preceding public comment period. A significant number of those comments suggested changes in specific wording. There were also a number of comments related to student-to-faculty/supervisor ratios and curriculum content. The new Standards will be posted on the CAAHEP website with an effective date of January 1, 2026.
New Americans for the Arts Survey Shows How Important the Arts are to People’s Lives and Communities
The Americans for the Arts’ first public opinion survey since 2018 underscores the connection between the arts and mental health. According to the results of Americans Speak Out About the Arts, 60% of American adults agreed with the statement, “The arts have helped me cope during times of mental or emotional distress,” and 75% of Americans would likely follow the recommendation of a doctor to “participate in the arts as a means of improving your physical or mental health.” Even more promising is that 81% of Americans favor government funding of arts and culture to address mental health issues.
