A new social media scam seeks to trick young people into depositing fake checks in exchange for paintings of the victims, according to a new Federal Trade Commission alert.
Recent incidents have shown that nonbank entities can create or amplify risk throughout the global financial system, but the pace of agreed-upon reforms has been "uneven" across nations "and we may already be losing momentum," Klaas Knot, chair of the Financial Stability Board, said in a letter to G20 finance members and central bank governors.
The Financial Crimes Enforcement Network issued a notice to financial institution customers about the new beneficial ownership information reporting rule requirements, explaining why certain customers must report directly to the agency in addition to giving information to their banks, which are subject to the customer due diligence rule.
A Texas court has issued a stay for a Department of Labor final rule that expands fiduciary status to nearly all financial professionals, ruling that the plaintiffs in a lawsuit seeking to overturn the rule are likely to succeed on the merits.
The Federal Reserve, FDIC and Office of the Comptroller of the Currency have issued a joint request for information on bank partnerships with financial technology companies to provide banking services. The agencies also released a related joint statement "to note potential risks related to arrangements between banks and third parties to deliver bank deposit products and services to end users."
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has issued a circular to "remind regulators and the public" that requiring employees to sign broad confidentiality agreements—without expressly permitting employees to communicate freely with government enforcement agencies—could violate legal protections for whistleblowers.
