While homelessness has been with the City from its earliest days, it is once again emerging as an issue of concern for commercial real estate owners and managers. BOMA/NY is addressing that concern—and your questions as to what can and cannot be done when homelessness affects your properties—in its upcoming seminar, Homelessness in New York: Know Your Options, Be Part of the Solution.

The seminar will be held on Tuesday, June 23 at Club 101 from 8 to 10:30 am, and invitations will be sent out soon.

Your colleagues from the Professional Development Committee are working with BOMA/NY’s Director of Legislative Affairs, Daniel Avery and Director of Education, Mary Sorgente, to assemble a well-rounded panel that will speak directly to managers’ needs, and advise on what actions can be taken. Within that context, the topics under development are:

An assessment on the current state of homelessness in NYC and the actions being taken by the City to alleviate the situation, with speakers from the Mayor’s Office.

• Legal issues and available City services, provided by two representatives of the City’s Homeless Services, Jody Rudin,Deputy Commissioner for Adult Services and Bruce Jordan, Chief Homelessness Prevention Officer.

• Homeless rights and available programs, discussed by a leader from the homeless advocacy group, Breaking Ground.

• Real estate impact, as presented by Dan Braccia, Managing Director and Chief Security Officer for L&L Holding Company.

The panel will be moderated by Jack Osborn, of the Osborn law firm, and time is being allotted for Q&A to ensure that all questions on this important issue are answered.
