Mapping out BOMA/NY's Future

Where will the industry be in five years? What will you, as real estate professionals, need? And how can BOMA/NY best meet those needs?

Those questions and more are now being asked of a statistical sampling of BOMA/NY members to help create a Long-Range Strategic Plan for BOMA/NY, its roadmap for defining and meeting the challenges of the next three-to-five years. Those being interviewed include new members, representatives from the Allied and Professional membership categories, and all of your colleagues who serve in volunteer capacities as chairs of the various BOMA/NY committees, on the Board of Directors, and as your officers.

The interviews and overall facilitation are being conducted by Tecker International LLC, a leading expert in association long-range planning with particular expertise in working with BOMA local associations. Work is being performed in concert with BOMA/NY’s Long-Range Planning Committee, chaired by Cindy Boyea, RPA, CPM, of Paramount Group, Inc. She is joined by committee members Mark Landstrom, RPA of Tishman Speyer, Jolene Yeats of the Port Authority of NY and NJ as well as Andrew Cooke of Hines.

Expressing his own vision and hopes for the Plan, BOMA/NY President James R. Kleeman, RPA says, "It is a wonderful opportunity to re-imagine our brand. I am hoping all interviewed will think out of the box...that kind of thinking puts power and ingenuity behind our programs and the way we serve our members. New ideas and imaginative thinking will take us to the next level and beyond"

In his own interview with Tecker, Jim was far ranging, covering everything from technology to recruitment. Outreach to commercial real estate’s current decision-makers and the next generation of industry leadership are very much on the top of his list. But in speaking with BOMAfacts, Jim also dived into the details of some of the items on his goals list. "We can make the website function as our members’ primary source of information, for example, by adding a number of capabilities, such as trending and historical data." He also sees the site as the single source of contact for members, a place where they can register for events, classes, seminars and more. And, he is seeking a closer tie-in with all the advantages provided by BOMA International, so that they are fully available for members to use as they choose.

The Plan will provide a strategic direction balancing the timeless principles that guide BOMA/NY with the vision of what we, as an Association, are seeking to become. It tackles these three key questions: 1) What difference will BOMA/NY make in the professional lives of our members and the profession itself?; 2) Who will benefit?; and, 3) what will the results be overall?

Essential to any long-range plan are the details of implementation, and the Committee-Tecker collaboration will produce not only the detailed roadmap, but working plans and metrics to measure success against a timeframe for review, evaluation and adjustment, based on the outcomes.

The current schedule calls for the Long-Range Strategic Plan to be completed for review by the Officers and Board by summer’s end. Implementation is targeted for early fall.

"We have so much to be proud of and build upon," Jim concludes. "By taking this strategic step, we will now be equipped with the strategies for building an even stronger, more responsive BOMA/NY brand. It’s a win for everyone."
